Wont go wrong with Kilkenny and Gowran Park, personally i enjoy Castlecomer but not everyones cup of tea and also Mount Juliet which speaks for itself

Yeah id recommend Gowran, nice enough course, Castlecomer is quite hilly, challenging, im not a great fan of it.

Callan is cheap and cheerful and is always in good condition but nothing specatular about the place

I have been looking up Carlow and it looks like a great course. Only 30km from kilkenny so thinking about playing it. Has anyone played it and is it worth the effort.

we played a society outing in Mount Wolseley in Carlow earlier this year and its a fine course. Do a quick search here and you'll find the thread.

Carlow is well worth the trip, a gem of a course.

    Lads old thread.

    But Outside of Mount Juliet.

What are the say top courses in Kilkenny - I've never played any other course ?

Gowran is a beaut, first few holes inside the race course are only ok but you go into the forest then and some real classy holes, I think its the 4th hole is worth the €15 green fee on its own.

Thanks Dar - it is actually an eye opener how little people talk about golf in Kilkenny outside of Mount Juliet - I think they are too wrapped up in the sliotar.

You can mention any other Leinster county and 5 courses will flow without thinking.

I'd really recommend castlecomer, IMO it's the toughest course in kilkenny and also the best, one problem it does have is its pretty hilly ( front 9 is on top the hill, back 9 is down under it).

So played Gowan in the end - an unusual setting being a race track - but it is a course of contrast with the inner course of track and outer course in the woodland.

The course starts off easy enough with birdie chances on first few - but then at 4 the tightness of the tree lined fairways comes into play - a great run of holes to 9, parts reminding you of Mount Juliet.

The greens and textures of the surfaces are terrific - great land in this piece of our stunning country.

Had a decent round going till 12 - was 2 over but sort of got stuck between what to do - is probably the 1 hole on the course playing before would help - had an 8.

When I think about it again - 9 is the only bad hole in the run from 4 to 10 - 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 are all excellent holes too.

Again you finish off in the poorer inner holes - but some of the ones inside are actually decent holes - due to the slight change in land elevation.

So very impressed - great view from racecourse stand having your food and pint after.

Very fast round - and a short sensible every day of the week course.

Finished 7 over - still playing poor enough , but actually played ok today up to 12th. Was a bit OTT - more than a bit for the last few furlongs.

It is a course , you probably shouldn't drive as often as you think on.

So a few more courses mentioned here I need to try out. Kilkenny in particular.
Off to discover a little more about Smithwicks.

What would be the closest driving range to Urlingford?

Callan is a lovely course. Greens are some of the best in Ireland. Very friendly staff and membership.

    course of contrast

Played it in boards outing the year before last and really liked it. I remember the opening holes complimented the tree lined narrow holes well.
