Got ripped off buying a second hand car

    Hi folks

I am looking for some advice. I recently bought a second hand car (within the last two weeks) and after driving it a number of times I noticed something was up with the gear stick. I took it to a mechanic who said the gear stick had been replaced and there was a serious illegal issue with the gear cable. He also took a look over the rest of the car and discovered two lines fused together which he said could have caused a fire in the car at any moment.

I was not expecting to get a prestine care but surely a car with so many illegal issues cannot be allowed? The car is NCT'd until next year but the mechanic has said he finds it very hard to understand how the car would pass with so many serious faults.

I know there isnt much in the terms of laws to protect those who buy second hand cars from private buyers but is there anything I can do? Could I report the sellar for putting a car like that on the road?

    Thanks!

Learn from this and always have some one look at the car before buying

You have answered your own question, once you buy private you have no come back.

I don't know why everyone here harps on about how great a private sale is if you do your homework. There are still things that might not be seen especially if you aren't great with cars. Sometimes even though is costs more it's better to get a car from a dealer as at least you have some comeback.

Pre purchase check is a must if you don't have a clue yourself. Dealers sell plenty of lemons too and they can be very slippery too so buying from a dealer isn't the safety net many think it is either.

Be it privately or from a dealer you check the car out or get it checked out.

Bull crap. Small issues are just as likely from a dealer. They will skimp as much as they can to aid profit.

Any chance you could elaborate on the actual issues OP, I'm struggling to understand the serious illegal issue with the gear cable.
