    15 jewel
    14K gold huntercased size 18s
    Waltham pocket watch
    Appleton tracey 1883 model
    manufactured 1886

    belonged to my great grandfather, and my dad passed it on to me 6 months ago. it's taken me this long to gather up the nerve (and the money) to get it serviced, and it arrived back yesterday.

    and it's ticking like a 126 year old American watch!

    at last I can use it like it's meant to be used!

    Gorgeous watch martinedwards. 15 jewel, very elegant dial and in gold too. A lot of the gold cases got melted down over the years especially in hard times like the 1930's and after the move to wristwatches really took over.

    The Americans made bloody great watches back in the day. In that era up to the 20's IMHO better overall than the Swiss. The accuracy I've seen reported on the US pocketwatch forums can be impressive. Well may you wear :)

    EDIT looked up the model and found a pic of the movement;

    Apparently it has screw down gold jewel settings, a patent micro regulator, expansion balance, and a Breguet hair spring. Very nice. Your great grandfather had good taste and a discerning eye.

    Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    well, the story behind it is that He and his elder brother worked on a farm in Donegal for two maiden aunts.

    they put in years of service and when the old girls died, the older brother got the farm and my G/Grandfather got this......

    it has come to the third child each generation, and my 12 year old already has his eye on it!!!

    the chain is almost too heavy to use.......

    The Waltham is a lovely well made watch. Enjoy it. I did a minor refurb
    on one for a friend, twas tricky getting the movement out of the front but it cleaned up lovely. His was nickel, not gold so yours will be a different class.
