Tall ships Traffic Delays

Took me just over 2 hours this morning to get from kinsealy to Dublin City Center  Usually only takes 40 mins.

Think it's a great idea holding events in Dublin city center but to close off main busy roads at peak times is just a joke. Could they not of held off on the road closers till the weekend or hold off events like this for bank hol w.ends.

Didn't see one guard doing any kind of traffic control but instead pulling cars in for driving in bus lanes etc. Given the heavy traffic delays you would think they would allow any roads/lanes (once safe) to be used

    Dreading the drive home later

    Rant over :p

Or maybe the problem is with people who knowing that there is a major event on in the city that will disrupt the flow of traffic from North to South still insist on driving their bloody cars into the centre of town?

It's bringing in €20/30 million to the local economy and has been heavily promoted for the past few months, could you not just use public transport for the two weekdays that it will be taking place over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭Ernest

The North coastal routes to the city centre were blocked this morning from Fairview across to at least Summerhill. A journey which normally takes about 25 minutes was taking more than an hour. The problem seemed to be centred at the southbound-only Matt Talbot Memorial bridge where there were large barricades blocking at least one lane AND there seemed to be some blockages too of the quay opposite the Financial Services Centre (called Custom House Quay). A single Bean-Garda was sort-of intervening but not very effectively at the end of Memorial Road by the Talbot Bridge. Meanwhile, across the bridge, Georges Quay towards O'Connell Bridge was completely clear.
Was this chaos caused by the Tall Sailing Ships event? Probably but there was also some radio mention of a "slow-drive" by taxi drivers to express grievance against Dublin Airport Authority over removal of taxi stacking spaces there.
Either way, radio coverage and advance warnings were, as usual, non-existent.

Public transport usually suffers just as much as cars
every month the city is being brought to a standstill for events. Maybe they should take into account that the infrastructure is'nt there just so the corpo can make some coin, and start to minimise disruptions during events rather than taking the all out approach

its four days, two of which being the weekend. I for one, use public transport, and still think its a great idea. Look at what the ocean race did for Galway. Live with it and be happy that Ireland is being put in the shop window as a decent place to come for events and even holidays. if stuff like this never happened, then the country would never get that chance and then there wouldnt be anyone except the indigeneous population left with nothing to look forward to.

Sitting at a standstill at Fairview at 8am listening to Dublin City Radio Traffic 103. NOT A PEEP mentioned it's backed up from amien st.

    Clowns.

I don't mind the Tall Ships & I've no problem with traffic so long as they're doing something about it. Zero traffic guards =/= doing something about it though.

im heading up from arklow for the tallships tomorrow, we wouldnt even consider driving (even though it would be handier, with the baby).
    public transport all the way

Only two roads are closed in the city with local traffic diversions in place. This was well advertised and the public transport was not adversely affected. The problem with the traffic was due to car drivers slowing to a crawl to look at the ships instead of driving. Tens of thousands attended today despite the festival only starting at lunch. The city is there to be used everyone and is not just for the sole use of car commuters.

OP - Is there a good reason you could not have switched to public transport for the two days? (ie drive to the Dart if needed)

It's an honest question, some people have good reasons but many others don't.

Pulling cars in for illegally using a bus lane sounds very much like traffic control!

Maybe lot of the almost 100,000 people in Dublin who drive 4km or less should walk or cycle? Maybe a lot of people who drive between 4km and 10km should cycle or get get the bus/train/tram? ...And then maybe there'd be a good bit more room for the people who do need to drive for work or for other reasons?

A city and it's streets are not just for commuters 100,000s to 1m people expected at the event are likely to view it as more than "just so the corpo can make some coin".

Maybe you should not be telling people how they should commute? Unless you're our previous lord mayor, of course :pac:

Maybe you'd explain how our public transport will cope if even half of these people piled onto it every time the corpo shut the city centre down, including for buses ? Maybe the last thing dublin needs is more two wheeled lemmings booting along the pavements?

The roads are for transport, the streets are for people, regularly shutting them both down, especially in the manner the corpo are doing it is massive a pain in the hole

Maybe I'm suggesting rather than telling, and maybe there's an important difference.

Fully agree that the city does not need more lemmings on footpaths.

Road and streets are for whatever a city wants then to be for.

So because a bus route is moved 50 metres to a parallel road for about 1 km it's adversely affected? Also the list of roads here are still open to motor traffic for local access apart from the north and south docklands quays. Motor traffic is prevented to these due to the numbers of people.

well lads, this website will provide all the info on the Talls Ships Events as well as the traffic diversions etc.

    http://www.dublintallships.ie/

The area where the Event is taking place has restrictions in traffic, except for local residents, thursday to sunday, from 7am until 10pm. The diversion ends after 10pm until 7 the next morning. Residents trying to gain access need to call the The Tall Ships Project office, or for any other queries they have on the events happening at 222 5243. This phoneline will be in operation this evening up to 9pm, and will be open both saturday and sunday as well.

also the garda website is good for the traffic diversions.

Feck the traffic caos for 2 days! (I drive into the city from Finglas every day for work)
There was lots and lots of info on this for months before hand.

Bring on the Tall Ships and anything else that gives off the festival atmosphere that was there yesterday and slightly today, even through the rain :D
