ICT training for teachers in Cork school Monday & Tuesday

I work in a Post-primary school in Cork and we are looking for an ICT tutor for Monday and Tuesday for approx an hour and a half Monday & Tuesday next week with a possibility of further work down the line. The tutors that we had organised fell through this morning unfortunately and the NCTE cannot help as all their tutors are back at work also. Here is a brief of the areas we are interested in upskilling teachers in:

"At a basic level would like to have develop a better understanding of basic maintenance of laptops (anti-virus, windows and software updates etc), how to use Word, Powerpoint and Publisher, adding audio and video to powerpoints, using itunes etc. At an intermediate level we would like to learn more about Moodle. We have our own Moodle site in school but teachers have had no formal training on how to use it. We would like for teachers to understand course creation, and also look into the use of coursework and activities, enrolment and grading in a moodle course. We also have google apps linked with Moodle and we would like to educate teachers about the possibilities Google Docs (drive as it’s now known) create for collaboration and communication. We would also be interested in any input the tutor would have regarding use of ICT for teaching and learning, special needs, numeracy & literacy etc"

It is important to note the varying levels of ICT proficiency of teachers in the school but they could be broken into smaller groups. Therefore it would be possible to offer 2 courses at the same time for teachers at different levels of proficiency i.e a course on Moodle could run at the same time as the course in using powerpoint. We would like to put an emphesis on how ICT can be used by both teachers and students for teaching and learning, collaboration, communication etc. Examples of strategies for ICT use in various subjects would be fantastic i.e use of ICT for English – assignments, collaborative work, where to store it, how to send it, etc

If anyone knows of anybody in the Cork area that would be proficient in this area I'd appreciate the info. I'd guess that there are people in UCC, CIT atc who would specialise in these areas but I cannot find any info online and the deadline is fast approaching. All suggestions welcome..

Have you checked with Cork VEC? They may have list of ict tutors that you could try.

I know from our staff even an hour and a half every day for two weeks would be a drop in the ocean.

Myself, I found Moodle Docs and their own forum was the best way to learn how to use it.

Any local schools who could send someone to talk to you about their use of Moodle?

I would agree an hour and half each day is nothing with the list you have in the OP.

I find that in schools the varying levels of ICT abilities within a staff are phenomenal.

If you mean that the list above would be based on a programme over a number of months fair enough but there is no hope that would get covered in 3 hours.

I would be well up on ICT but with a one on one tutorial of Moodle in my school it still took maybe an hour just for Moodle, and that was just a quick run through, never mind actually going into detail with people not so proficient

Believe me I agree with everything that has been said. Schools need to foster a lot more professional development regarding technology. Teachers also have to take a lead and learn for themselves. What would be fantastic though would be if I could get someone to come in and explain what Moodle is. A few teachers use Moodle in the school but really at a very basic level. I am working in course development for moodle at the moment but have never used with a class including gradebook etc. I leave my courses open for all pupils to view the resources. But I'd love to get someone in even if it was late Monday afternoon, or Tuesday afternoon to introduce Moodle and how they use it. Might inspire a few more teachers.....

Definitely agree with what you are saying, I suppose our answers didn't really help your problem.

In reality people who are not up on things like this only need an intro first as if you go overload it will be too much for them and they will never even try.

Moodle, Google Docs, youtube channels etc. all a great way of students accessing resources at home, the general thing is that some schools are really up and into everything then others into nothing, but all schools as you are saying should now start to get into these things.

I got all of that set up last summer and again the teachers who are aware of it use it more and more, e-mail, google docs, moodle etc. Its a fantastic set of tools really and all for free.

It's not even my job, but I was trying to get someone in at the start of the year that would do something worthwhile with the staff. I suppose inspire rather than try to train them. If anyone can save my bacon before the weekend it would make for a productive start to the new school year instead of just more meetings! God bless Croake Park hours!!

You could put a notice up on the UCC and/or CIT forums to say you're looking for someone. I'm sure there's some computer whizz out there who would do it.
Are you sure there's no one on the staff who could do it? Most of those things are stuff you can teach yourself by fiddling around with the program for a while.

I totally agree. I suppose what we want is for someone at this stage who could showcase Moodle and all the other things I mentioned above. The rest we use to a point, but most teachers do not understand what Moodle is never mind how to use it. Someone showing them the possibilities might get them into trying it out with a class and you go from there then..

Anyone we got who had done the 2 year PGDE in DCU was fairly well up on Moodle - I think they might do it as part of their course. Even a short demonstration might get other teachers interested.
