have a sr20det that recently blew the turbo.took turbo out and there was play in the shaft.the turbine fins were all fine.is it a case of replacing the turbo and fire on or will the blowing of the turbo have effects on the engine.
    any help apprecited.

What's the symptoms that led you to determine the turbo was blown?

A certain amount of play in the shaft is normal.

If the compressor and turbine blades are intact and it is the turbo oil seals that have failed then there will be no further effects on the engine once you remove and fully clean the intercooler and intake system(if it was the compressor side seals that failed). Even if its was just the turbine(exhaust) side that went, the exhaust will likely be full of oil.

Its not a turbo problem so....you have a split/broken boost pipe or a fueling problem I'd say.

the turbine on the turbo seems to be wearing off the side wall at one side if that makes any sense.all intercooler pipes seemed ok..

A failing turbo wouldn't cause black smoke though. Is the play side to side or front to back on the shaft?

replacing a Hks gt2860r to a T28.will this be as simple as drop it in and fire away?

A remap being required is obvious enough but other then that, once the gt2860 was the correct sr20 fitment then the t28 will be a straight fit.

You'd be better looking for a t28r from an s15 spec R as the standard t28 is not a roller bearing turbo.

    it was sr filimant alright.
it there a big difference between the t28r and the t28.power wise?

I put a t28r from a silvia (theres more than one kind of t28r) into my s14a. Good upgrade actually, its a nice turbo that should give you ~270hp with a remap and supporting mods. You'll need a new oil return pipe however.

I thought the t28 that came out was knackered but it was the turbo gaskets that had gone. If your car is smoking however it may be the turbo seals. Replacing the gaskets is a balls of a job but if I was able to complete than its possible. The most important thing is to get the nissan locking tabs on the manifold turbo gasket otherise the nut will loosen and you'll have to do the job again (try conceptua tuning on ebay). Also new studs and nylocks or locking thread on the exhause manifold is a good idea. www.sxoc.com is a huge help when doing any of this btw.

Not to be accused of shilling but I have my old t28 in the garage, it was in ok nick, certainly not using oil. I would still recommend the t28r however.

If its a ball bearing t28 from an s15 it is ball bearing and a very good upgrade from stock.

There is confusion as some of the Japanese Silvia and 180sx came with a ball bearing T28 turbos.

Worth checking on sxoc as you may need an oil restrictor on that turbo but im not sure..

Its covered there many times including turbo serial numbers so your sure.

Also may be worth checking to see has anyone had issues running one without changing the map and to what boost level. (as it spools quicker)

Mine was stock except for a front intercooler and ran perfectly.

Speaking of which a large boost leak could have a similar effect, i.e no boost and smoke. The standard intercooler is almost certainly leaking. It would be a good idea to test for boost leaks. Again, the sxoc has a guide to do this.

finished off puting in new turbo just there.
had everything back all pipes and nuts and whatever checked.
it started grand.the oil presure gauge was gone mad.it was reding 7bar or something.
after 10mins it heated.noticed one of the rad pipes was hot.and one was nearly cold.
is it possible for the water not to be circulating?

Did you use the original metal oil and water feeds? They are known to crack and dump yer coolant/oil all over.

Sounds like the water circuit is airlocked however. Did you empty the coolant when you took the turbo out? When I did this i simply left the engine running and sqeezed the top pipe while periodically refilling with coolant mix.

Not sure on the oil pressure however. What new turbo did you put in, some have a restrictor built in?

the oil and water feeds are braided.
didnt empty it.just toped it up..

    got the cooling issue solved.
but now the turbo wont spool.
used the old actuator which was set at 0.8bar.
    checked all hoses ect..

    • Does the turbo turn by hand?
    • Have you made sure you have oil and water at the turbo.
    • First wire the waste-gate shut and see do you see boost. Be gentle....

    Then try this.
