Are Saorview due to increase their power on oct 24th? I've seen alot of places around, resteraunts, garages, homes that are using saorview but getting periodic sound drops, pixelated frames etc.

Maybe I'm finiky, but I find it irritating to watch programs with periodic dropouts....

Should we have a quick review of the best saorview boxes similar to the way what sat review satellite recievers....

Performance with weak signals, strong signals, durability, mast head amplifiers....

Given that they have had upteen years to sort this out, should they not have finilised negotiations to put tv3 on saorsat?

Its all seems very half assed, half a service on saorsat and poor quality signals on saorview....

Has anyone got the humax hdr to work with aertel?

Some places will be getting a boost, notably Clermont Carn's service area. Also, Mt. Leinster will benefit from a channel change to cure the Welsh interference problem.

Nobody should accept regular dropouts in signal, but a lot won't accept it's actually their own receiving system that's causing the problem.

I agree, but the signals don't seem to be very robust.

One minute the signal is 90% then it suddenly drops to 60% and then back up to 85%, it can happen in a split second.

If it happened on a satellite signal, you'd be expecting a tree or something similar to be blowing across the front of the dish but with terrestrial it doesn't seem to be that simple.

It could be a passing car, taxi, train....

Is there Forward Error Correction on the saorview signals and next question - is there enough?

If its a passing car, train or taxi thats interfering then the aerial couldn't be installed in a very good location. An external roof mounted aerial is recommended although in some places an internal aerial will be sufficiant because of strong signal reception. The only times i've ever seen sinal readings like you describe on a meter is when an aerial is off line or electrical interferece. I have seen it happen on tv signal menus and when tested with a meter you find that the tv signal screen menu is not accurate. A competent installer using proper equipment would not have any reason to leave a customers reception like that unless it was an area like Ronnie has mentioned above. There is FEC in the receivers but FEC can do very little with reception from a poorly installed aerial.

Andy the service has actually be on 4 years. I have been watching it that long without issues.

People experiencing drops outs can usually be traced to their own aerial setup issues, not the transmission network. This is not RTE's fault.

    Mainly those with.
    • Aerials pointing the wrong way.
    • Old aerials with bad connections.
    • Dodgy/Old internal cable wiring.
    • Wrong out of group aerials.
    • Old VHF aerial
    • Masthead Amps set too high (RF Overload)
    • Aerials that require a masthead amp.
    And any combinations of same.

TV3/3e not being on Saorsat is not Saorview's fault. Its Tv3s. TV3 no doubt have issues with programme content rights. And even if they didnt it is highly likely that they might be reluctant to pay carriage to be on the Saorsat platform. They are a commercial operator with their own financial woes.

Scooters/mopeds are the worst I've found. Would love to have had a sniper rifle ready every time I heard that dreaded whiny hairdryer noise.
Something to do with EM interference generated from the relatively unshielded spark plugs firing (compared to under a car bonnet say).

Is it not illegal to operate a device capable of interference in this matter. Not sure what the legality is. Heard rumour that if a moped was actually found to be causing interference they could be compelled to do something about it, i.e, proper shielding on the spark plug wires.

Afaia, the same parameters are used as for the post-switchover, standard def. UK PSB muxes: 64QAM, 8K DVB-T, with 2/3 FEC code rate.

The UK com. muxes changed to the less robust 3/4 rate a while back (obviously areas still to switch started/will start with this setting), seemingly without any outcry.

Whether there's anything to be learned from these comparisons is another matter, of course.

I've started having drop out issues with Saorview. I bought a new TV in January with a built in Saorview receiver. The signal's been perfect until yesterday. Now the sound drops out on a regular basis.

If you are in Dublin manual rescan again on channel 30. There was some changes in the Dubiin area recently.

Thanks for the reply zg3409. I'm in Cork. It righted itself again today but I'll be keeping an eye on it and if it gives me any more trouble I'll try the rescan anyway.
