5th gear disappeared from gearbox

I have lost 5th gear completely. The other gears are OK but getting a little bit stickier. I am driving the car every 2 nd day and changing gear very gently. Due NCT next month, Is this an NCT failure (can't see how they would test this).

I can still do 120kmh on the motorway in 4th and the car seems ok other than that, I am happy to drive it. The problem is that it will cost a lot to diagnose the exact problem in labour charges and the car is too old to spend money on.

Maybe change the car then? Sounds like your gearbox is packing in.

Do you know how to change gear without using clutch? It should be quite easy going in to fifth given the low amounts of torque in fifth.

I once had an Astra and had difficulty changing gear. It turned out there was a small bit of metal on the clutch cable had slipped. It was a very easy fix.

If you can change gear by just revving the engine and no clutch then it is not a gearbox issue.

    ^^^^
Shure he said it was changing the other gears easy. There was no indication that the clutch was at fault, where didi you get that from?
OP, if the gearbox is on it's way out your best bet is to just get a second hand one from a scrapped car. I would say with the right supplier and mechanic you would have it back running for less than 300 yoyos. Gearbox is usually a staightforward enough swap job.

Have you considered asking a mechanic?

Your going to strand yourself if you keep driving it.. probably in the worst possible place like friday traffic in the middle of town.

5th gear is gone. ie the same as neutral
Have you considered asking a mechanic?

I have been to main dealer who had a quick look, then said 70 quid per hour labour to diagnose.

and they would give me 500 for the car as is today.

its not a laguna, it is a citroen c3 diesel 10 years old

Can someone answer this please. Have checked and cannot find out.

    Is this an NCT failure.

It is not an NCT failure.

It's not an NCT failure, they don't test for it.

Frankly, I wouldn't drive around in that, the gearbox is going to fail, full stop. On top of that, if you're doing 120 in 4th you are wasting a lot of fuel and, depending on how the gears are set up, you seriously risk overheating the engine and adding odds to the possibilities of being stranded.

I shall add that a transmission failure can be very dangerous and cause a serious accident.
