There is lots of small businesses on facebook (for example), who are advertising that they have jewellery with 'Hello Kitty' jewels or can embroider your favourite disney characters onto pajamas/hoodies etc and others even using e.g Jedward and 1 Direction ribbons and pictures etc.

Any number of card-makers have everything from 'Lightening McQueen to Mickey Mouse to Manchester United pictures and logos on their cards.

Is this legal? Are they too small fry for the big boys to be bothered chasing or is there some kind of license they need to use all this stuff?

    No.

    Probably.

Yes. They might simply have a licence.

    In that order.

My massive nerd side knows that to use Star Trek images etc commercially a license is/was available for quite a cheap rate. Very likely a small to middling number have a license.

On the same topic, this piece is word for word from a conversation on Facebook.....

"you can use images once your not selling over 100 of the same design so say you sell 100 you then change the design slightly and you can sell 100 its people that mass produce that they dont like like someone that sells 1000 of the one thing"

Apparently the person posting had asked their friend (who is a solicitor).

Seems unbelievable to me. Another poster enquired as to how this system would be policed and a few others requested links to where this rule could be found....
    There has been no reply:pac:
