Hi im looking for a bit of information.

I am interested in becoming a secondary school teacher. The issue is I didn't do my junior or leaving cert when i was in school so im a bit lost on how to go by it. I have a fetac level 5 in childcare that i got a number of years ago but nothing else that would be relevant to becoming a teacher.

What is the best way for me to become a teacher. Should I go back and do another more relevant plc course and with the hope of getting a relevant degree course the next year. Then doing the one year teaching diploma the following year or is there another better way of doing it.

    Thanks for any help

Apply for a one year University Access Course to see if you would be able for a degree, then apply for the teaching degree (Hons) this would qualify you as a teacher. What subject would you like to teach ?

If I was successful in the university access course would this give me direct entry into the teaching degree or would i need to do another course in between.

I'm interested in teaching business studys, maths and home mec.

This page on the Teaching Council website gives you a list of all recognised courses that combine the subject degree with a Teaching qualification: http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/_fileupload/Teacher%20Education/Programmes%20of%20Initial%20Teacher%20Education_Aug2011.pdf
See section entitled: 'Post Primary Concurrent'

The other option is to do a recognised Hons Degree in your chosen teaching subjects and then do a one year PDE to qualify as a teacher.

To my knowledge Home Economics teacher training is only available in St Angela's College in Sligo http://www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie/

More information also available on the Teaching Councils website: http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/
