My Dad is wanting to get fit/ Healthy/ reduce his belly. He's mad for the aul fast walk and will do an hour a day probably 5 days a week.

He came back from his hols a little bigger and decided to do some sit ups. I don't think thats a great idea, as far as I'm concerned sit ups are what really fit and strong people do - everyone else just hurts their back eventually.

So I'm asking what can he do at his age? A few squats a day with a hand on the kitchen table? a lunge? (my grandad ended up with weak old legs so I think these could be good)

Any safe core exercises? I'm trying to get him to a pilates class or something to complement the walking but something at home would be great.

If you could get him to go to a class for a few weeks that would be a great thing as he would learn a few exercises that he could do at home.

He could also use a good dvd etc. or a visit with a decent personal trainer.

if there is a class near you,you could get him to do TAI CHI ,its also called tai chi chuan, its a noncompetitive self-paced system of physical exercise and streching, its very popular now particular with the more mature generation ,check it out on google, keeps me very fit and i am 72,

If he enjoys this, then great. Consistency is key, and getting him into a class he mightn't necessarily enjoy could be a step backward.

That's pretty much par for the course, I have a belly, i'll train it and it'll disappear.

As others have said, a visit to a decent personal trainer would be of the most value to him. They'll (or should) assess his movements and abilities and be able to formulate a few exercises and progressions he can do from home.

Same answer to the core exercises, it really depends on his starting point. I'd start with something like bird dogs (youtube them) as there are some really good progressions from basic to advanced that ought to give him some understanding of core control.

As for the fat loss end of things, you can point him to the stickies for information on how to make a dent in the belly. I actually think the stickies in the nutrition and diet subsection are a little clearer.
