I'm as thick as **** when it comes to this digital switchover.

We have a sky box without any subscriptions so we can pick up the bbc channels and whatever else that is free. But not the irish channels on the sky box.

We can tune in rte channels on the tv but the picture is crap. To get these channels, we need a saorview box, that I do understand.

But is there any thing we can get to combine the free sky channels + saorview channels together on the one box.

One option is a Walker or Triax combo box:
    http://www.tvtrade.ie/satellite-receivers/combined-digital-receivers.html

Gives the Saorview channels + Free To Air channels i.e. the UK channels.

    These boxes are saorview approved.

If your tv isn't too old, post the make & model: you may just need the right kind of aerial to get the Saorview channels.

As Peter says above the aerial is very important too.

Use the Saorview coverage checker to identify which Saorview transmitter is recommended for your location - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/coverage-map/

Saorview aerial information here - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/step-2-check-aerial/

If you can receive acceptable analogue TV3 via the aerial now it should be suitable for Saorview otherwise an aerial upgrade or readjustment might be required in certain circumstances.

i like the title, the "free sky channels" which is something irish people are so brainwashed by sky, the amount of people who think the only modern way to get channels is sky.
Fair play OP for working around the sub.

Its a philips cineos. Its about five years old.

The stickers are still on the tv and it says its a digital tv so im not sure if that helps.

Might be a bit on the old side, would need the full model no. to be sure.

There's a selection of Philips tvs with the right kind of video decoder listed in this post & the actual Saorview approved models are here: http://www.saorview.ie/product/philips/
