Beginner cyclist query

    Hi,

I am about to begin bike training with the intention of entering a couple of cycling events next year and perhaps a couple of triathlons!!

I need to buy a bike. Went to a bike shop and the guy in the shop showed me a Giant avail 5. He said that is's ideal for a person with my intentions. I've just been online doing a bit of research and on one of the sites it states that this is not intended for entry level triathlon purposes.

Just wondered if anyone would know what kind of features a beginner bike should have?

    Thanks a mill
    L

Is that what you mean by "not intended for entry level triathlon purposes"?
Defy and Avail are aimed at male and female road riders who crave the lightweight, stiff, efficient power transfer of a competitive road bike but with the smooth feel and comfortable positioning of an endurance-oriented road machine.

It looks fine to me tbh. Just buy a pair of clip on aerobars to use in race days and you're set. No?

EDIT : Actually, you can get a better Avail that the Avail 5 - better quality components and carbon frame and that would be even better suited. If you think you can afford a better bike, go for the better bike.

That looks fine as an entry level beginners bike and would be fine for a couple of seasons of triathlon until you got serious.

My wife got the similar Giant Defy 4 and she's in her second year and isn't in a rush to upgrade. I got an entry level Specialized Allez and it's been fine for me too.
