Empty words from Lennon as regards racism then.

Don't know if he was asked about that. He'll need to explain it when he is asked. Griffiths has not been issued with a suspension by the club or the SFA yet, when that happens Lennon will have to address that question.

If he is asked. Most journalists that get access to the press conferences know better than to accuse the manager of being a hypocrite regards racism. Those who do write it would likely be long blacklisted already.

Not one bit happy about that tbh. I personally think he should have been let go.

He'll have to explain it. This decision on the face of it doesn't tally with his comments on racism being a sackable offense.

    1) Lennon doesnt have the power to sack anyone by himself now he'll be drawn into a game of politics over the decision. Who will end up getting the brunt of the criticism, Lennon, Lawwell or the Celtic board for this decision and what working relationships get strained in the process will be a long lasting issue.

    2) I dont think he was ever going to be sacked without due process. If they are going to sack him it will be Anelka style dragging of the feet and wait to see the outcome & backlash.

    3) How was the run PauloMN?

Agree that it would be hard and costly to sack him, to the point that the board would never allow it. Hopefully a fine, suspension and final warning will see him wise up. As good as he has been, one more strike and surely he's out.

Agreed it'll be tough to sack a player over it, and difficult for a manager to exert that power, so why say that's what's gonna happen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭rosskind

Doubt Lennon thought one of his players would be that stupid!

No doubt it will go on for a while, I suppose the club have to be careful about how they handle this wrt the player as well as the fans. Have to wait to see what the SFA say about it first.

Good, thanks, smashing day for it. I ended up at over €500 raised for a great cause and a decent chunk off my PB as well. I'm happy anyway, and thanks for the donation! :)

Would it be costly though? Is what he did not regarded as a breach of contract i.e. it wouldn't cost the club anything to show him the door?

It bugs the crap out of me to see players like Griffiths walk into a club like Celtic and not appreciate what he has been given. This guy could be playing in the CL and there he is acting the mickey.

No doubt Celtic could tear up his contract now but to avoid litigation they'll wait for the investigations by the police & SFA to add weight to whatever action they do take.

The cost would be the transfer fee and the £1m paid for him.

Not clued up on the legal side of things but I'm sure he'd appeal. Then there'd be investigations, no doubt long, drawn-out ones, could get messy. Also in terms of his quality as a player, given our struggles to find a decent striker. It shouldn't be a factor, but no doubt was.

If he's found guilty by the police & sfa of something thats in breach of his celtic contract he'd be an idiot to waste money on an appeal....oh wait its Leigh Griffiths. He'd probably take it all the way to the european court of human rights :pac:

So it was just empty ****etalk thinking he would never have to act on it? I think if you make such a big statement you have to follow up on it.

If he's found guilty in a possible court case I would imagine(and hope) that Celtic cancel his contract but for the club to take action before that could well impact on any future court case so this may have some time to run yet.

Is he in the squad to play this weekend?

Would make sense to suspend him while the situation is ongoing, if it is in fact ongoing.

How would he follow up on it? Firing is completely out of his hands.

And anyway what's to say he don't be fired, employers must follow due process.

Of course it would be brilliant if they could do what we all want them to do and boot him out the door and issue a strongly worded statement but if you have been paying any attention to how Celtic has been run in the last few years you'll know that they'll do things properly.

He came out and made a huge statement, if he doesn't follow up on it then his word doesn't count for much in the future.

No, as said several times already, Leigh Griffiths is entitled to due process. The club havent made a decision yet because they are probably following basic legal advice. Lennon wasnt going prejudice the ongoing investigations today by saying the club are going to sack him publicly.
"We will do all we can to help him along," said Lennon. "He knows now there is a responsibility to the way he behaves."

"There is no question he has a few issues that we all have in our private life," said Lennon. "He has been open and frank about it with me.

"At times, I think he gets antagonised by people and he just needs to learn to take a deep breath and walk away and at times that is not the easiest thing to do."

"There is a police investigation going on and we are doing our own internal investigation as well and they will run parallel with each other and we will take a line from the police on that as well," added Lennon.

"I have spoken to Peter and he has spoken to me about what is going and on and we will deal with it as it comes.

"It will be a joint decision, I would imagine. We will talk it through like we always do with every situation that crops up and we'll deal with it in the way we think is the best for Celtic and what we think is the best going forward.

"He has a few adverse headlines over the few weeks, but he is our player, my player and if there is a part of re-education or education or educating him the right way then we will do that."

    According to the BBC
Lennon previously said that "any sign of any sort of racism against colour, religion, background will be an instant sackable offence" at Celtic and stood by that comment when speaking at the club's Lennoxtown training complex on Friday.

Anyone have the full recording of the press conference?

Ignoring the headline it sounds like Lennon hasnt said much at all. Fluff for the papers, i.e. Only what we know already and he's certainly not committed to keeping or sacking the player as highlighted by the bolded

I didn't say that Lennon won't do anything about it although I am somewhat sceptical. Just responding to those saying why it'll be somewhat ok if he doesn't.

You need to go back a page or 2 and read the thread again.

You'd need the full interview for the context of Lennon's words. Seems to me to be trying to say as little as possible either way until investigations are completed. Even then we mightn't ever know who's decision it was and what they really think.

With investigations and legal stuff, it was never going to be instant and it may still happen. But sounds like he's planning next season with Griffiths in mind and he's played since the incident so I think it'll just be a warning.

    2+2=5?

Him stating the reality of the situation has no reflection on his personal opinion. You are just seeing what you want to see

Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk has no plans to leave the club after his first successful season in Glasgow. (Various)

If we can get Forster to do the same thing, we'll be doing very well indeed!
