I've never understood why people use those. It's just glorified littering.

Most venues do not allow sky lanterns for the reasons described.

There's also the question of insurance, which a lot of people don't always realise.

i tried to bring this to the attention of some feicin idiots who were organising a load of those at an event - not a wedding mind but an event being run for kids - what example to set, eh?! i was accused of being a child hating hippy:rolleyes: glad to hear venues are starting to get on board with banning them though, that's progress.

Not just a threat to animals but can lead to a waste of important resources if mistaken for a distress flare

You need permission to launch them too.

was playing at a wedding, band had 10 minutes to go, floor full, building up to big ending, groom comes over and says
"its 12pm, full stop, everyones going outside to light some of those sky lantern things that I got"
"can you wait ten minutes? we're nearly finished"
"No, I wanted to do this at 12"
30 minutes later they all come back in freezing cold, groom wants band to play last 2-3 songs, noone moves for rest of night. In the top 2 or 3 worst things Ive ever seen done at a wedding for effect.

As to hotels allowing them, If 100 people suddenly go outside and start lighting these things, managers are rarely around to stop them, theyll have them lit by the time he does.
