Good old-fashioned cop shows - any new ones?

So I'm not a big TV fan, I'm much more into movies but when I do catch a series I like I tend to watch every episode without fail.

I'm looking for some suggestions for modern equivalents of the good old-fashioned cop shows. To get an idea of what I mean, I'm talking about modern equivalents of the likes of Cagney and Lacey, CHiPs, Hill Street Blues, Starsky and Hutch and the Streets of San Francisco.

The last modern one I watched was probably NYPD Blue and I liked that. NCIS has some elements of the type of show I like too.

Any others out there I should be watching? I've had my fill of piss-poor 'forensic' shows like CSI, so I'm not looking for that type of show.

Rizzoli & Isles, Castle and Common Law spring to mind

Blue Bloods and the cancelled after one season but really good Chicago Code.

2 other cop shows that are great but don't match what you're looking for would be The Wire and The Shield. The Wire is about the criminals as well, while Vic Mackey, the main character in The Shield is a dirty cop

The Chicago Code was great! I really like Southland too.

'Southland' is a must: Cop show done in a gritty styling, going between cops on the beat and homicide investigators.

'Castle' is great - smart and very funny at times with noticeable chemistry between the leads. Laughed at this more than many comedies.

I hugely enjoyed The Closer, but that's more of a detective procedural than uniforms-and-car-chases as I suspect you're looking for?

For more old fashioned stuff, Flashpoint is a good SWAT drama, and Rookie Blue is a solid blues-and-twos action.

I've watched all seasons (am now on season 4) of White Collar <snip>. It's a really good show in my opinion. About the FBI and a jailed art thief who ends up working for them.

for a buddy cop series there is Common Law but it isn't for me though
as mentioned Chicago Code criminally only had one season as it was excellent
NYC 22 is a good street cop show like NYPD Blue or Third Watch

They never found a replacement for the late Stephen J cannell, who was knocking out cop series (among others) for decades in the US like there was no tomorrow.

BBC's Luther is definitely one of my favourite police dramas. It follows DCI John Luther (Idris Elba - starred in The Wire), a skilled yet brutal police officer who regularly resorts to bending the rulebook in order to capture some of London's most ruthless criminals.

RTE are currently showing Season 1 late on Monday nights. It's on at around half 12 tonight!

I really enjoyed Line of Duty, a 5-part police drama from the BBC. Not really a buddy-cop show, and only 5 50-minute episodes but it's really good quality and I thought the plot was very good.

Detroit 187 was another good show again cancelled after one season like The Chicago Code

Line of Duty was a great series written by the super smart Jed Mercurio. Pity it was only five episodes as it felt a bit rushed at the end. Good news is that it's been commissioned for a second series.

Luther and Line of Duty are excellent BBC offerings, but they are more serious than the likes of C&L, CHiPS, S&H etc.

I know you want modern shows but check out Homicide: Life on the Street

Since you've liked older shows I think you'd like this

    I loved it anyway

+1 for The Chicago Code, can't believe they axed it after one season

Check out the new version of "Hawaii Five-O". Good choice on NCIS and maybe check out NCIS:LA as well.

Not a cop show as such, but if you liked "CI5 The Professionals" have a look at "Strikeback; Opertion Dawn" for similar over the top shenanigans.

Finally, have a look at Dexter. He is a forensic specialist, but unlike CSI, he is the one knocking off the bad guys :D

    Rookie Blue (Canada)

    Scott & Bailey (UK)

    Rush (Australia)

All good in their own way but quite different from each other.

+ 1 on new Hawaii 5-0, great chemistry between the cast and good overall story arc plus weekly plots as well

The Good Cop started on BBC 1 tonight, it gets a terrible review on The Telegraph but I actually thought it started pretty well.

    Will be watching next week.

The Telegraph review is a bit spoilerful if you haven't seen the show. Here's a snippet from the BBC:
Police dramas are hardly a rarity on British TV. Yet new BBC One series Good Cop, beginning on Thursday, attempts to put a fresh spin on an old formula.

"A lot of police dramas lately have been procedure-based," explains writer Stephen Butchard, whose previous credits include 2011's acclaimed Five Daughters.

"I wanted to pull it right back and root it in the human being."

To that end, his latest work views the daily grind of Liverpool policing from the perspective of one man - PC John Paul Rocksavage, played by Warren Brown.

I half considered recommending Sky's A Touch of Cloth. :D

It wasn't that bad, the Telegraph critic must have had a bad hair day when he wrote the review. His bit criticising the cop for being too thick to run to the other door was stupid in itself, being as I'm pretty sure the gang made certain that door was jammed shut too.

The BBC has shelved the final episode of drama Good Cop following the deaths of two police officers.

The episode, due to be screened on Thursday, features a violent attack on a female police officer.

"In light of news events, BBC One has postponed the final episode of Good Cop, due to transmit at 9pm tonight," the BBC said, in a statement.

The drama will be rescheduled to a later date..
