Is it true that if you did HL Maths and it was your lowest grade in the LC that the bonus 25 points will not count?

As in HL maths needs to be in your top 6 to be counted for the extra 25?

I asked this question before and didn't get an answer from several teachers. Following this thread with interest to find out what the story is

No, that's not true. You count it if it's one of your top 6 after you add on the bonus points. But it doesn't need to be in your top 6 without the bonus.

Edit: If you go onto the second page here it's explained quite well: http://www2.cao.ie/otherinfo/calc_points.pdf

It was my lowest grade, a C3, but because the 25 points made it worth 10 more than my next lowest, a B3, I counted it. :)

The only situation in which you don't count it is if you add 5 grades to the printed grade and it still isn't in your top 6. You won't gain a full 25 points (I gained 10), but you can still count it.

Add the bonus 25 to the points for your HL maths grade.

If the *combined* score puts maths in your top 6, count it.

For example, if you only got a D3 in HL maths, that would count as 45 + 25 = 70

If you scored B3 or higher in 6 other HL papers (therefore worth 75 points or more) then you wouldn't count maths. Assuming though that the 70 is in your top six, you do.

They should of given 25 points to people who struggle i.e ordinary level. Not to people who were gonna succeed regardless. Bloody rubbish!
Just change the syllabus! Not screw with points etc

    IMO

That would give points to weaker students. The idea behind exams is to show different levels of ability.

In my experience, ordinary level students in maths who struggled tended to give up completely. Maybe the extra bit might of motivated them.
Having said that though, you should be motivated to do well anyway.
It's not really fair though giving extra points to one group and not others.

S'pose we'll all see how CAO goes tomorrow..

LC exams? I personally wouldn't think that. Not when a point's race is involved, blocking others from getting courses.

    IMO :)

I can only imagine my dramatic fail in Maths if I had taken Higher, like I only got a C3 in Ordinary, a bare pass considering I always mostly got Cs/Ds. :L

But I'm in total agreement with the 25 point yoke, if I was able for Higher Maths I most certainly would go for it :L

The points are an incentive to people who could do Higher Level maths for the Leaving Cert, but choose not to because of the relative increase in workload and stress compared to Ordinary Level. Before, it would be a simple decision, do Ordinary Level to concentrate on other subjects for points, but the 25 bonus points gives them a dilemma.

The 6% increase in students taking the subject at Higher Level(now 22%, previously 16%) this year combined with the very low failure rate shows that there were always more than 16% capable of succeeding in the subject.

And what about those who struggled but worked their asses off and got a D3 in HL even though they could have given up and settled for a B in OL? Surely they deserve the points for their struggle?

I'm not in favour of a blanked 25 points for HL Maths no matter what course you're applying for - but giving it for OL instead of HL would just be stupid.

There's already a thread arguing the pros and cons of the bonus points, guys!!! :)
