My neighbour called me in to look at a new problem she was having. Only 3 of the 4 computers in the house could receive an active web connection at a time. It used to be fine. There are 3 laptops and 1 ipad. Basically, it seems to be random which device will not work at any given time.
It's a wired router connected to a wifi box. I swapped her wifi box with my one, which works fine in my house, but had the same problem. Only 3 of 4 worked, randomly.
I'm thinking that there may be a setting on the wired router that is limited to 3 devices now, but why and how it changed, I have no idea.

Can anyone shed some light please???

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Did you have a look at the settings on the router? If not and you don't know how to, post the exact make and model of the router here and someone will talk you through it :)

Ahhh, unkel, I forgot to mention... I live in Korea now so it's a Korean router. Made by a Korean company and uses Korean language. I can read Korean, so I just kind need a nudge in the right direction as to what it might be. I'm completly befuzzled, as I have never come across this before!

Maybe the IP pool is limited.

On a typical NAT router, you'd be looking for the DHCP server settings. It could be shown as start address and number of users (eg 192.168.1.100 -- 50 Users) or it may take the form of start address and end address (eg. 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.150).

However, given that the setup previously allowed more, the customer didn't change anything, and it is now such a low number, I wonder if it's all bridged to the ISP and they've introduced a restriction... what IP addresses are the working computers being allocated?

The iPad is the key here.
They tend to hold on to their IP address even though the IP lease might've expired.

I ended up, partly because of an IP and partly to disable DHCP completely, setting up static IP addresses.

So I went through each device, and mapped it's MAC address to a unique local IP address.

If you want a minimalist approach, try just setting up a static IP address for the iPad, then go to the iPads network settings and refresh the IP address.

There is also the possibility of something else in the house interfering with the wireless signal, like a cordless phone for example. There is aset number of channels/frequencies that WiFi is allowed to operate on, and most routers/ap's allow for this to be changed. Whilst I cant speak with authority on the config in Korea, I know in EU that there are 13 channels, you may need to play around with channel selection a little to see if that helps.
