Transfer within DCU possible??

Hi, my daughter put down psychology in UCD first then coursed in DCU. She didn't realise that DCU had psychology course : ( If she doesn't get into UCD and gets into DCU via another course, can she transfer into psychology, assuming she hits cut-off points?

Would she have to complete first year in another course or could she request transfer early on? Has anyone gone through this process ? Will she keep the grant ? If she loses the grant then transfer wouldn't be an option.

Would really appreciate any help on this.

The only way you'll get proper answers to all of this is to contact DCU and ask their admissions office. Internal transfers are at the discretion of the college, and to be honest I haven't heard of anyone being able to change course in the first week or so of college due to a mistake on the CAO form. You never know though, as these things wouldn't be publicised.

If she gets offered psychology in UCD, you could check with both colleges if she could transfer to second year in DCU after completing first year in UCD. This is possible for some people where the modules in first year in both colleges are similar. For transfers like this, she would need to pass all exams in first year (having no August repeats, as the transfer would have to be arranged over the summer), fill out forms and write a personal statement as to why she is transferring. She wouldn't lose the grant as she would be going from first year to second year.

The only way she would lose the grant is if she started a different course this year, then reapplied next year and had to start first year psychology in DCU. As well as losing the grant, you would also have to pay fees (not sure of the exact figure for psychology, but you would probably be looking at >€5000). In this case, she would probably be better off taking the year out and reapplying through the CAO next year to DCU psychology.

Great, thanks for your feedback. If she gets psychology in UCD then she will definitely stick with that . Her second option she was thrilled with and will most likely get that , but had she realized there was a psychology course under the school of science in DCU she would have put that down either first or second. I had a look online and there appears to be an internal transfer procedure. It will all depend now what offer she gets Monday morning and then were the final cut off points are.

    Hi
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this? My daughter didn't get the points for psychology in UCD but did get the points for both psychology and for communications in DCU. She never put psychology on the CAO form and is now really upset, as she would have gotten in on her own merit.

Has anyone transferred successfully from one course to another within DCU, early on? She is so upset about this and frustrating that she would have had enough points and had her offer in the morning.

If anyone has actually gone through this process can they reply or maybe PM me please? Would really appreciate it.

Dont know if you remember talking to me earlier, but sorry about that!
If its any consolation I didn't get it either. I could be in DCU yet!lol.

I got offered Psychology and Sociology in UL.
Not too sure about it, don't even know what Sociology is tbh.
I have the points for just straight Psychology there too so maybe they would let me transfer.
I dunno what to do really.
I also got accepted to Queens, Belfast.
Have some serious thinking to do really. :)

I remember going to the DCU SU with the same problem. They were all for it but unfortunately I didn't have the required points to swap into the course I wanted to. I'm sure they could accommodate your daughter. Hopefully it works out for you's!

I dunno. Big decision really, I would know literally no-one and I could see myself falling behind. Have no idea about accommodation or anything.

Hi nbar, thanks. She is distraught right now at her slip up. Do you think I should contact the students union asap? She's waiting to hear about DCU access as well to find out if she'll get subsidized accommodation (though I know that's unlikely).

biohaiid - well done with both your offers, UL is the sister college of DCU so I wonder if the process is similar. From looking on their site it seems the requirements in the first couple of weeks are to have the points and whatever necessary grades. As it goes longer they look at end of semester grades. I would really like to locate someone who has successfully transferred.

    Thank you.
I looked it up and once I have one semester done I can apply to transfer, providing I have the grades for the course I want or within 20 points of it. :)
Feeling a little more optimisitc now. Wish I had put DCU further up the list tbh.

Yeah I suppose contacting them now wouldn't hurt. http://www.dcusu.ie/ Tell your daughter not to worry, everything will work out for her :)

That's good, that's there's some options there. Is it possible for you to defer Queens for a year if you do take UL?

Should my daughter contact DCU now?? or should she wait til orientation? So confused as she's waiting to hear back about accommodation which hopefully will be tomorrow..

I was just thinking that, I'm going to look up all my options today once I actually have the willpower to get out of bed.

Hope your daughter gets what she wants anyways. :)
