Why are the words "Rest In Peace" used?

    I believe it was a poet who came up with that saying first a REALLY long time ago.
    RIP is of more use to the people reading it than the person 6ft under. It sort of symbolises to us that this persons soul (good-name) should be left that way and at peace. Don't bring up the dead in conversation or bad mouth them..Respect there life and what they did.
    Something of that nature anyways.
