    Hi,
Looking for advice on Broadband providers in Athenry town area. With Vodafone at present and have a lot of connectivity issues with them - particularly when visitors come or when connecting via my iphone. Who's good, fast and reasonable? Have landline at the minute but rarely use it - just have it for the internet connection.

I think the eircom broadband is the best. we had changed for a year for vodafone, but every evening we had connection problems... and then we went back to the eircom. 8 Mb broadband was 42 euro for a month in the first year, now is 54. Is working well. Love it.

    Thanks for that,
I was hoping there might be a cheaper option but there doesn't seem to be anything else available. The connectivity with Vodafone is a real issue though so think we'll have to change over.

Just checked the eircom homepage. Now is 40 euro per moths for new customers, and after 6months 45euro.

Thanks so much. That's not bad now -not much more than I'm paying to VF. Will look it up now.

Hi, I live about 9 miles outside Athenry, past Monivea, I use 3, it costs 20.32 per month for about 15gb or mb or something, a huge amount anyways I never use anywhere near it, I have a dongle yoke but my neighbours across the road also have 3 and they have a wireless connection, I just haven't gotten round to upgrading really. The connection is pretty good, sometimes I have real probs but mostly it's ok, have probs getting online between 6-7 most evenings though! Their customer service is in India and a total nightmare to deal with it, but on the whole for 20 euro a month I would recommend. Cheaper than Eircom!!

Like Tranceypoo I also use 3. I am in a National Broadband Scheme (NBS) area and needed to get a booster installed in the house as the reception was poor. However Athenry is not in a NBS area. I was using the dongle in Athenry today and it was fine for general browsing (Boards, Donedeal, Ebay E-mail etc). Had to be beside a window though.
I think you can try the different providers (Vodafone, O2, 3 etc..) on a trial basis to see if the coverage is OK. I think if you are only using the internet for general browsing then a mobile provider should be fine. If you want to watch movies/programmes then you will need something with higher speeds.
I prefer the dongle as I can bring the laptop anywhere and connect to the net as long as I have 3 network. The WIFI option only allows you to connect withing the home and you rely on WIFI when you leave the house.

    Hi guys
Im living in the Athenry area and using the 3g stick which is working just fine, able to watch youtube and live matches. Had a VF Rep call to the house the other day selling VF packages €29.99 for up to 24mbps, which means around 10mbps which is very poor.
There seems to be issues with every provider regarding signals, think its just blind luck Im able to watch youtube and the likes. Ireland is the most expensive in Europe for broadband and the slowest.
    Something that needs sorting :(

Thanks for all the feedback. It's definately so expensive in Ireland for broadband -particularly for speed we get. I don't want to go for the dongle option as there could be a few of us using laptops and phones at the one time. Also I have Internet included on my phone package so I can use 3g on that anywhere without any additional cost. I might look into 'the trials' and see how that works out.

Give lightnet.ie a look, ,2meg down 1meg up for 35 or 3 meg, 1 meg for 40, other packages available and its wireless so no fone line needed, aerial on the roof and a router inside house, sorted

Have 3 WiFi Modem. It's good apart from annoying occasional drop-outs which co-incidentally as someone else has mentionned, is also in the evenings, but I guess ya can just drag yourself away from the screen and start into some chores or something when that happens! :pac: It usually comes back again in a few minutes. It's €31 for 60G per month!!!! Going up to €35 in January-February I think. All-round is good coverage-wise out the countryside i.m.o. anyway.

Actually now that I think of it, it hasn't dropped the connection at all for the last few weeks! Hope this doesn't jinx it now!

Hi guys, sorry for hijacking thread. I'm looking for the best all-round broadband/tv package in Athenry, price & product wise. Phone line in house already, I have sky tv where I am at the moment and I quite like it. Any recommendations?

    Hi All,
Had problems with Vodafone for past 12 months so finally decided to drop them and go with sky only to discover our Eircom Exchange here in Athenry is full to any new broadband requests. I'm raging here - what a monopoly Eircom have and they don't seem to want to spend the money to facilitate more users. Appalling!!!!

    Lightnet here we come!!!

From a quick google, sky looks to be the best broadband option, does anybody use the 3 all you can set data plan? If so what's their coverage like in Athenry? Thinking of moving out there soon.

    Hi L'prof
I'm using the 3 base station, a step up from the dongal stick say. i have to constantly turn it on and off during the course of the day
which is a joke. Im going to switch to Eircom and then switch over to their high speed broadband package next year when they role it out in the Athenry (50mbps). I pay 34euro per month for the package I have at the mo. it all depends on what you want the internet for I from my office in house so a good connection is key. if your just sending e-mails and checking sites the 3 package should do you, anything other then that forget about it, watching youtube is eye wateringly slow.was reading there that they will be rolling out 300mbps internet in the UK soon " we are so behind here"
    good luck with it :)

Doesn't sound ideal at all. We're not definitely going to be in Athenry, but wherever we end up theh situation is bound to be similar. I might just get the prepay plan for a month and see if it's worth it. If not, it'll be Sky or Eircom I guess!

hi just checking if anyone knows the current situation for vodafone broadband in athenry. I heard they took over the BT service and this uses eircom lines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭installer

as far as I'm aware all dsl broadband is over eircom lines regardless of who your isp is. According to the eircom website fibre is avilable in athenry

according to the eircom fibre roll out map fiber bb is available now from eircom in Athenry so should also be available from Vodafone as they resell the same connections (but cheaper)

Not myself, but experience of both, generally fine.

I have eircom dsl at 8mb down and .4mb up, rarely goes down and is overall very acceptable and i would consider myself a fairly heavy user.

Any comments from people with mobile (dongle/tethered) internet in Athenry? Coverage etc. of different networks.
