Who's Income is Accounted For?

Hi there, just finished my second year of a level seven degree, and will be entering into my third and final year in september. After which I hope to move on and study a level 8. I want to move out of home and I was wondering, if I moved out this year, would my grant application for 2013/2014 studying a level 8 course only be based on my income alone, as in I am not dependant on my parents?

All I can find about this is on citizens infomation, which states "If you were ordinarily resident with your parents from October 1 of the year before the year of entry to the course, you are considered dependent on your parents and your income "

does that mean I will be counted in my own right for 13/14 if I move out ASAP?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, if you move out by October 1st you'll be considered in your own right.

I'm not sure about this - I think you need to be a certain age as well (23 I think). This happened my GF - she moved out of her parents house and self financed all the way through the degree but because she was under 23 when she started the level 8 she was deemed as dependent on her parents so their income was taken into account.

I had heard that had changed this year but looking into it it doesn't seem to have changed. OP ring up just to make sure. Always thought that rule was stupid. There are articles from 08 about bills meant to be brought in to change this, so definitely ask SUSI. Even if it's not changed for this year maybe it will be for next year.

No. Once you start as a dependent student you cannot change your status.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

No; some of the stuff in answers so far are completely wrong.

OK then - maybe enlighten us by pointing out what's wrong and help the OP?

    This post is completely wrong

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=80275828&postcount=2

The rules are clearly stated in article 13.2 of this (p11)

    www.studentfinance.ie/downloads/1339418623/Student_Grant_Scheme_2012.pdf
    Classes of applicant

    13. (1) For the purposes of this Scheme there shall be two classes of applicant as follows—
    (a) independent student; and
    (b) dependent student.

    (2) An applicant’s class is defined at their first point of entry to an approved post leaving certificate course or an approved higher education course or at their point of re-entry to such an approved course and will continue to apply for the duration of their studies.

Thanks for that. Not having a go but that is much more constructive and helpful for the OP. And in fairness the poster (Muir) did tell OP to ring to be sure...

An applicant’s class is defined at their first point of entry to an approved post leaving certificate course or an approved higher education course or at their point of re-entry to such an approved course and will continue to apply for the duration of their studies.

Would I be right then in taking that to mean that my application to a level 8 course in a new institution would be defined as re-entry to a course, and therefore, I would be classified as being self-dependant?

Thanks for the help so far guys and girls!

No. It's still the point of entry.

To be reentering there has to be a break of three years.
    3) In this scheme an “independent student” means a mature student who did not ordinarily reside with his or her parents, or either of them, from 1 October of the year before the first point of entry to an approved post leaving certificate course or an approved higher education course or re-entry to an approved course.

(4)“Mature student” means a student who on 1 January—
    (a)in the year of entry for the first time to an approved post leaving certificate course;
(b)in the year of entry for the first time to an approved higher education course (other than a course known for the time being as a post leaving certificate course);or
(c)in the year of re-entry to an approved course, is at least 23 years old.

(5)“Re-entry”, for the purposes of this Scheme, meansa mature student entering an approved course following a break in studies of at least three years having previously attended an approved course.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Apologies for getting it wrong. I thought the new course would be the point of entry for the OP.
Sorry Nidge_Weasel, it's a pity you can't be considered in your own right.
