Just got test date-nervous as hell

I've had a series of provisional licences for the past few years, but never had the motivation to get the test done. I've now got a fire under me and have a test date for September. I've had lessons, and recently got some more, as well as doing a lot of driving with someone in the car. The issue for me is that I've been putting off the test so long I think my confidence is gone. I've been told I'm a good driver, but I make stupid mistakes and tend to get very nervous when anything unexpected happens. I feel like the test has now become this big monster that I can't defeat no matter what I do! I'd love any words of encouragement or tips or reassurance.

lazygal you can do it!! Seriously, I was extremely nervous and irritable in the weeks running up to my test but when it actually comes to it you will do fine!! I was so concentrated on doing well I'm sure the tester thought I was a mad woman! He was trying to make small talk but I was having none of it:p I passed with flying colours:D

Just take a few deep breaths - the worst that can happen is that you fail and you have to do it once more! It's really not that bad in the grand scheme of things!

Just make sure that you are extremely vigilant and observant - look in your mirrors regularly and indicate when necessary. Don't drive too slowly either - there's a difference between careful driving and downright irritating driving! Drive at a reasonable speed depending on the road you're on. Watch out for pedestrians and other vehicles/hazards. All of this pretty much goes without saying anyway:)

    Good luck!! You WILL pass;)

Couldn't have said it any better than leahyl. The build up is probably the worst part, but once you get to doing the test, you will realise that you are actually quite calm and ready to go for it.

And so what if you fail; just learn from your mistakes and do it again. It's that simple when you think about it :)

Thanks all. I have my test Friday week. I have be steadily taking lessons and practicing a good bit. I've another lesson (2 hours) tomorrow and plan on having a couple more next week. Instructor is very good and will take me out for a warm up session before the test.

My worst thing is reversing around a corner. I seem to take it too wide and have to over compensate. So planning on a lot of work on this.

OP, look at it this way: you are going into the test without a full license. The worst that can happen is that you will come out of the test without a full license - the exact same as you went in.

You have nothing to lose at all, just give it a shot.

I've been told multiple times that I am a good driver, before and after passing my test. And it still took me three efforts to pass.

First time I wasn't prepared well enough. I had all the lessons but not the raw practice of driving, which is really what you need. The more comfortable you are driving around every day the more natural the test will come to you. I choked multiple times because of this. Also, I got nicked on theory, when I was asked to open the bonnet and point out how a lot of things work.

Second test I thought I aced, but it turns out I got a grade three mark for something which I thought was unjust. All I'll say is always stay vigilant at junctions and in your mirrors, it goes a long way.

Come the third time I didn't give a rat's ass anymore, and passed with hardly any marks against me. Maybe it was because I just drove without intense concentration and more naturally.

The best preperation for the test is driving. Do as much as possible before the test. I found that any nerves I had dissapated once I was in the car with the examiner beside me. G'luck!

Well I passed! Posted in the successful thread. The only recommendations I have are plenty of lessons and practice. I didn't go out alone at all and I think that meant I had no bad habits. I was on roads I hadn't practiced on but I think that helped as I wasn't complacent and had loads of observations and good control on them.

Great advice, I never looked at it that way at all. :)
