OK I have a chance to get a 2002, 2nd owner, 180k KM, 2.4 Fiat Stilo Abarth for a reasonable price considering its the Balkans.

btw the petrol bill has me quivering at the moment lol.

Does anybody have any opinion on this car, its a 12 hr round trip to go see this car so all opinions will count.

Service history? Condition? It's 10 years old, these things are central.

Not a hope. The engine isn't as powerful ap it could be and the selespeed isn't a great gearbox

If its the same selespeed box as they used to put in alfa 156s, fine if you dont like driving, if your going to spend money on petrol and tax buy something else

Selespeed? Run away! 2.4 tax for 169bhp and not even a manual....?

Personally, Bravo HGT or Coupé turbo. Source one or the other ;) (yes, I am the motors forum Bravo fanboy too. Totally unbiased I swears )

Tax is not an issue :) as its a different system where I live, but from you guys are saying the selespeed is a real issue....
Hmm...... is there any way to keep an eye on it E.G. regular fluid top ups?
Just on a sidenote is it because people in Ireland dont generally like automatics or is it just too flaky (unreliable) a system. As I've had automatics before and never had a problem with them.
and as being underpowered will a remap help?

You just answered it yourself. My understanding of it is essentially it is a motorised gear selecting system with a few tricks with the clutch. Over years, the contacts, wires, buttons etc degrade. This is where the problems come from.

There are boxes you can swap on instead of the selespeed, don't have my book at hand... I'll see if I can dig it out though ;)

What kind of cost would it be around if I was to fix or recondition(if thats the right word) an autobox.
That picture makes it look like its easy to replace lol
