They tried to 'hot wire' it. Anyone know the cost to put all the wires back into place.

    Yep, that would help too.

My car was broken into a few months back, they ripped the plastics off the steering column etc. but couldn't get it started as the immobiliser kicked in. They did such a job, that even with the key I couldn't start the car. I had to replace the plastics and get the connection box that the wires fit into and all it cost me....was a tenner. I got the parts from a breakers and did the work myself.

Hopefully you'll be this luck that it doesn't cost a fortune.

Sounds like the exact same. Imobilizer kicked in and the key won't start. Roof slashed which will cost a bit though my get my mother to take out the ole sowing kit.

    Where was this, dude ?
Absolute scumbags, sorry for your trouble.

MX5s are going the way of the old Civics - the only ones surviving are the ones with alarms/immobilisers.

If you ask on http://mx5ireland.com/forum, I bet someone there has the parts you need. Was the loom cut ? If so, it should be straighforward to have the wires reconnected with crimp-plugs. If the wires were pulled out of the plug, it's a bit more difficult. Best to get a plug from a scrapped car and crimp or solder your wires onto it.

There are a couple of MX5s being worked on in the MX5 forum. so you might get them to tell you what wires go where, and maybe even sell you a plug. Also there are a couple of traders there that will have the parts you need !

I know someone that does work on MX-5s so I'll give him a call. I was just wondering the cost to see should I go through my insurance but it looks like it'll be cheaper doing it myself.

OP can't give you an estimate on price on fixing that but if it's only wiring I can't see it costing an arm an a leg. The hood would certainly cost more. The problem is getting it to a mechanic/auto elec but you may be able to get a tow on your insurance without your NCB being affected.

Did they break the steering lock? I had the same problem on a car years ago. The tried to break the steering lock but couldn't manage it but managed to bend the steering column which meant I had to replace that as well.

On a side note it is sickening that scum like this are allowed breathe the same air as the rest of us who go to work to buy the car we want.

    Best of luck OP.

I was able to push the car to the underground parking (I should have parked it there in the first place) so I think the steering lock might be broken though I'm not 100% sure if it had a steering lock in the first place. How much did it cost to fix it?

TBH I can't remember at this stage. It was a Micra belonging to my wife. I had to replace the steering column as it was bent so the steering wheel was all over the place when the wheel was turned. If the column was fine I wouldn't have replaced it over a broken steering lock. As you know at this stage it's not a deterrent.

My mate is a mechanic and he put it back together FOC. It cost me the price of the parts from a scrapyard and we had a few pints.

MX5's are nearly as common as Micra's so your parts bill won't be huge. After that it's labour and I'm sure some of the mechanics on here could give you an idea on hours labour/costs

It's a real shame he didnt get the car and crashed and died. Atleast it would have made the insurance claim worthwhile.

By the sounds of it, it seems cheap enough to fix which has p*ssed me off slightly less.

It looks like it's just the handful of wires going to the barrel. Assuming they haven't mangled the steering lock or tried to get at any immobiliser you have, it'd take any auto spark about 3 minutes to solder it back together. The worst case is you might need to get the wiring plug on the back of the barrel from a breakers yard, it looks like they cut the wires pretty close to it.

If there's enough wire sticking out on the plug you could twist the like coloured wires together and wrap each wire in tape to keep you going. This is not a long term fix but it will at least get you to the electrician.

Might be a good opportunity to install an engine start button. That would make you smile abit :)

Good luck with it and I hope the would be car thieves choke on horse sh!t and die.
