If it is a petrol model then the most likely culprit is the vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox. They give lots of trouble on them.

i had the same problem, its the cluster in the dash, its over 500 euro from a ford dealership for a new part but you can change it for a 2nd hand part from a 02 model for about 60 quid :), you have to be careful to get milage in around your own on the new cluster aswell.mine started the same, next you will go to turn on the car and all the dials will stay at 0 and odometer will be blank, which happens on and off until eventually it gives out( i didnt wait this long though)
google 03 cluster problems on ford focus, seems to be a common issue

My sister had the same problem with her 2004 1.4 focus and it cost her 325.00 including labour and that was with a new part as well.

Corrosion on the circuit boards on the instrument cluster causes random problems on these. This is easily fixed by dismantling the cluster, removing the circuit board, and cleaning (I use an old tooth brush). I have a spare cluster on standby but have never used it because problem sorted in all cases so far by cleaning.

This is a different problem. If all the instruments stop working then the fault is in the cluster. If just the speedo stops working and the rest of the instruments stay working as normal then it is the speed sensor in the gearbox.
