Playing from the rough

Out last night and played three shots from the rough that just went about 40 yeards or so.
I was watching a few Youtube videos today and one guy suggests putting the ball further back in your stance and hitting down on the ball more than you would on the fairway. Also open the Club more.

    What works for you ?

That sounds like good advice to me. Ball positioning towards the back of the stance and a steeper swing will help ensure good contact and will lessen the amount of grass between clubface and ball. Opening up the club a little bit is important because whatever rough you connect with on your downswing will usually grab the club and twist is closed.

Most important thing for me is (1) avoid the really heavy stuff if you can and (2) don't be a hero, the most important thing is to avoid a disaster score so first priority if to get the ball back in play

Here's a tip from Ernie Els, works extremely well for me.

Seeing as I'm playing from there a lot these times my go to club is the 7 iron and rip the bejasus out of it with the ball slightly back of middle.
Around the greens I stick with the PW and come down steep so as not to get the head turning.

    What club are you using?
Sometimes you just have to hit a wedge out and accept it, it totally depends on the rough.

What works for me is gripping the club tighter with my left hand(I'm right handed) minimizing as much as I can the club closing when playing from the rough. It really depends on your lie but your lie will always dictate what club you can hit not the distance you have to hit from the fairway or the rough.

Depends on the rough, have little difficulty on my home course. I dont find the rough very penalising and it doesnt make much difference to yardage for me.

There are patches where its thicker and its just about accepting that you need to drop down the clubs to get the most distance with the lowest amount of risk

three quarter controlled swing, hard into the back of the ball, it will probably come out lower and generally a right to left movement on the ball.

If you pull out a 7 iron, its going to come out more like a six iron. I always as a right hander, just try to avoid the pull left out of the rough.
