Importing a car to UK

    Hello,

Now, lets get this out of the way first. This is a pretty crazy and probably ridiculous idea.

I am moving to the UK in the next month.

Although I don't have to have a car, it would seriously help me in my line of work, so I would prefer to have it.

My accommodation will have a car spot.

I have taxed the car (624 euro for a year) for 3 months at around 149 euro (all rough numbers here)

I only get 31 days of outside ROI travel. I have only just got a new insurance policy out (80% can be returned to me if I cancel. UK is a quick change of circumstance for me which is why I took out the insurance again)

Hopefully the UK will be a long term thing so, would I be just as better off bringing the car to the UK, get it registered in the 31 days I am allowed and import the car?

    My feelings are:
    - I know its service history,
    - Its damn reliable,
    - Its not worth a whole lot (selling and then buying in UK)
-If I am there for a few years it will probably die over there and Ill never have to bring it back, which I wouldnt as that is very expensive.
    - I am pretty sure what is left to pay in tax is more than the tax for the car for a year in the UK.
    - Since my accommodation will have an underground/enclosed permit parking the insurance would not be crazy.

    So, am I mad?

    Thanks,
    bbk

FWIW. I think you are. Have you factored in the cost to inspect and re-register it? You won't be able to insure the car in the UK with Irish plates.

Honestly? You're FAR better off selling your motor here, banking that money and buying something in the UK with UK plates. TBH, you'll get a far better spec for less money relatively speaking. And a lot less hassle.

Yeah, its looking grand to do it up North, 55 quid and an MOT and its sorted so it seems.

Feckin about insurance companies on the mainland is the next issue for any car I use as Axa have a 3 year residency law so research a plenty going on.

A better speced car for the money I sell my wagon is interesting, a 2001 A4 Estate full leather for a 2000 paddy spec Golf Estate.

Spec out of the way, I would wonder would the hassle of finding a quality used car be the same as getting the registration done within the 31 days Axa cover me in the UK.

    Hmmmmmm. I am mad.
