Seagull playing with stone on roof

I have a flat roofed house beside the sea. On a few occasions this week a seagull has been on the roof "playing" with a stone. He picks up the stone and drops it and then rolls it along the roof for a bit. This makes a huge noise within the house. It seems very deliberate play and he keeps it up for quite some time
Would anyone have any idea what this behaviour is about?

I must confess I threw a few small pebbles beside him hoping it would scare him off. But he just picked up these pebbles and started to play with them as week. I almost think he said thank you.

What steps can I take to discourage seagulls from landing on the roof and doing this sort of thing?

    Thanks

It was probably trying to break in to a mussel. Was it an adult or juvenile

It was a juvenile. I will look more closely the next time at what he is rolling. I often find crabs in my garden which I expect are adult gulls dropping them from a height to try and break the shell. Hopefully this chap will quickly work out that he is not going to break open a mussell on my felt roof.
