    IGN-last-stand-poster-610x940.jpg

Directed by Kim Jee-woon (I Saw The Devil, A Bittersweet Life, and The Good, The Bad, The Weird) and co-stars Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Jaimie Alexander, Luis Guzman, Peter Stormare and Genesis Rodriguez.

Official Plot Synopsis: "After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy.

With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown."

Kim Jee-Woon's involvement has me pretty excited for this. Still can't get my head around the fact his first western movie is going to be one of Arnie's come back movies.

This is the first I've heard about The Last Stand and I have to admit that I like the sound of it! I'm a sucker for stylised showdown movies with a western edge!:D

Kim Jee-Woon's The Good, The Bad and The Weird was a quirky and humorous Korean twist on the western genre. Absolutely love that opening train robbery sequence!!

I'm more excited about this being a new Kim Jee-woon film than Arnold's comeback. I hope it's good. Kim has had a fantastic run of films. If it sucks it won't be his fault.

I haven't heard anything about the rating. R hopefully or else I don't see the point.

Arnold's comeback handled by Kim Jee-Woon at least shows some hope it won't be a miserable z-movie.

I'm well looking forward to it since I'm a sucker for Arnie movies. :pac:

    I hope it's rated R.

He seems to have gotten fairly back in shape for this film, especially for his age:

One thing though. Only Clint gets away with that gun :D. Anyone else is compensating. Did he lose his machine gun or something?

I was wondering why everyone was so pumped for a new Schwarzenegger film. His filmography before his part-time retirement wasn't all that inspiring. Collateral Damage, anyone?

But Kim Jee-woon? Sign me the **** up.

    First trailer:

Looks pretty good, Arnie is looking a bit creaky around the edges and I'm guessing Knoxville is the comic relief manchild.

That trailer looks really poor to me - regardless of the romantic notion of the man man returning to the big screen...

Nah, nothing wrong with Knoxville - He's basically replaying his role from the 'other' movie with The Rock (Walking Tall) where he seems to be some otherwise non-police figure getting roped in to be the quirky deputy.

I'm sure it's not exactly a hard role to replay so I assume he'll be inoffensive to non-fans, just the same old comic relief.

I like knoxville in jackass or comedies but in films that are supposed to be serious i hate it when they shoe horn in a comic figure. like when they brought ryan reynolds in to blade or simon pegg in star trek. just not needed.

Say what now? Awkward "comic relief" shoveled into the role of a classic character just because he was big in Hollywood at the time. Movies like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz - yes .. Star Trek, Mission Impossible - no

Not every movie needs a "funny man" but then seeing as movies are made by studios rather than film makers these days who are trying to cater for every demographic to max the revenue, can't be too surprised I guess.

Hopefully it doesn't unbalance the film as it did in the above 2 examples

I thought he was fine in Star Trek, there was plenty of humour in the film outside of his character too, didn't unbalance it at all imo. Going by the trailer for this I don't think Noxville should be too out of place, the tone looks pretty light anyway.

Two things that stand out of the poster for me

I know never seen an arnie poster with his full name before they normally just read schwarzenegger not arnold schwarzenegger.

Also since when has arnie been left handed ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,330 ✭✭✭niallon

Anyone else think the current bland nature of action flicks makes the time perfect for Arnie and Sly to take over the cinemas again? Actions movies are being churned out to beat the band these days and watching the majority of then I can't help but think they'd only be better with the novelty of The Oak or Stallone starring. Can't wait for the Arnie flicks to start flooding in

Could be totally wrong but it looks reversed to me - isn't the Sherrif's/cop's badge normally on the character's left in movies?

Im with yeh on that one these days action flicks are trying to hard to be intelligent while thats all well and good sometimes at other times you do need an old school style action film with witty cheesy comments, simple plot and lots of explosions, its why I love the likes of Running Man and Demolition Man

I stopped being a fan of him since Collateral Damage all his films after eraser have been crap. The problem with his films from the late 90s onwards is that they started to become pg13 type films with the violence toned down, also he is trying to act in the later films in the best arnie films he doesnt try and act.

Collateral Damage had the potential to be a great film if it had followed the same style as commando. Remember the scene were the cop tells arnie that he cant take the "law into his own hands" the arnie we love from the 80s would just said "wrong" and shot the guy in the head.

Another thing about Collateral Damage is that you can see how arnie f**ked up his face through plastic surgery if compare him in that film to the 6th day you can see his face is pulled back and he has smaller lips.
He would look better if he just let him self get old hes starting to look like micheal jackson now.

I doubt any film he makes now will be as good as his 80s films, even not so good films like raw deal are better than anything he made from the late 90s to the 2000s.

The image appears to both reversed AND partially corrected.

    Here's a high-res version:
    http://moviebuzzers.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/The-Last-Stand-poster.jpg

Unless Arnie has taken to buying blouses in the ladies department, his shirt buttons the wrong way, as does the fly of his trousers, and he has his belt on backwards.
However, the zipper on his jacket is on the correct (left) side, and in spite of technically being worn on the wrong side of his jacket as you say, the text on his sheriff's badge is (vaguely) the right way round.

Also, his revolver (an 8.38" Smith & Wesson Model S&W500) is either an extraordinarily rare and utterly unheard of left-handed variant, or digitally reversed like pretty much everything else in the image.
There's also something weird going on with the grip angle.

So, it looks like some arty type who knows nothing about the technicalities of firearm design or the conventions of men's clothing flipped the image for whatever reason, and corrected the couple of things that they DID know about.

I think there has been a lot of fallout from the popularity of films like Taken and the Bourne series, with some directors becoming desperate to cash in and create the next "smart" action movie...and failing miserably!!

They become obsessed with the notion of Inception-like plot "twists and turns" when some just seek a humble action flick with explosions, guns and not something that aims to unravel the mysteries of the universe!

I'm talkin' old skoool!! Peace out!! :D

Right on, I want to see a man's chest explode with his beating heart exposed and a clever quotable quip from our hero.

Get it back to basics people!

100% agree... I'm a fan of Pegg but he was just terrible in Star Trek - kept disrupting the flow with any appearance

Pegg was fine. I'm very fond of lines like,
Scotty: Are you from the future?
Kirk: Yeah he is, I'm not.
Scotty: Well that's brilliant, do they still have sandwiches there?

    and

Spock: Are you a member of Starfleet?
Scotty: I... Uhm... yes. Can I get a towel, please?
Spock: Under penalty of court martial I order you to explain to me how you were able to beam aboard the ship while moving at warp?
    Scotty: Well.
    Kirk: Don't answer him.
    Spock: You will answer me.
Scotty: I'd rather not take sides.

The problem is with the script. The scene with him stuck in the tubes was a the film's worst and least necessary action beat. His little Ewok-like side-kick is totally unnecessary too.

I was excited to see this but after seeing the trailer my enthusiasm has been taken down a couple of notches. The fact that Peter Stormare and Johnny Knoxville are in it is nearly enough to hold on and wait to rent it.

I'd be a little concerned audiences may go into this expecting formulaic, cheesy action, but that's not what Kim Jee-woon excels at. He's more of a genre deconstructer, dismantling clichés while lovingly reassembling them to create a familiar yet unique whole. Schwarzenegger's presence suggests balls to the wall action for many, and that may be what we get. But Jee-woon is much, much better than that, and let's hope he's able to giddily subvert as he has repeatedly done in the past. Complain about Knoxville or Stormare, but it's the director alone that makes this a film of note.

I just think he is over the top in nearly every role I've seen him in. One example that springs to mind is his role in Minority Report. Just terrible.

Also he was over the top in Armageddon which takes some doing.

I'm not his greatest fan by any means, and his appearance in Expendables 2 was pretty godawful, but this looks like it might be fun, Arnie himself seems like might be back in the saddle proper (and trying a spot of acting too!). Also loving the retro styling of the poster - seems almost too artful to be something that'll grace cinemas tbh

Getting a bit of Stallone in Copland vibe off Arnie, as in the old dog who knows he’s on the way out but still has a bit of fight in him, obviously though with a bit more humour as seen in the trailer. The only one of his later 90’s films I enjoyed was End of Days for similar reason – he was a flawed hero / aging alcoholic

Ironic considering Stallone himself looks to be back thinking he’s an 80’s action star in his prime because of the success of the Expendables - in the trailer for his new one Bullet to the Head, you’d swear he was 35 the way they’re portraying him.

At least in Rocky 6, bad and all as it was, he acknowledged the fact he was an aul fella. I didn’t see the last Rambo, did he run around in that like the last 25 years never happened too?

    You're right.

It is the wrong style for the cinemas and the marketing people already know this.

The poster was a 'once off' commission for the New York Comic Con back in October.....ditto the art style!

Don't expect to see this anywhere near a cinema lobby anytime soon.

I really enjoyed the last Rambo a great action film, did he run around as if it was 25 years ago no he surrounded himself with younger mercinarys and made a few references to his age.

As for this I cant wait looks good and delighted to see Arnie back on the big screen again, yeh it wont win any oscars but Arnies films have never been about that just plain old action fun :D. Also looking forward to seeing what Jee-Woon Kim can do in his first Hollywood film.
