Like there was a sort of IT boom a few years ago,I was just wondering what careers would people think are long term choices nowadays,as in studying and working towards the future? Thinking in general terms of a young student or a career move for a 30 something

It depends on what you are in to and like to do but there are not shortage of qualified IT jobs in Ireland at the moment,in alot of cases there is a shortage.

Jobs in IT are still plentiful - especially coders. Good ones. C, C++, .Net, Java etc. All the usual suspects. Plenty of work around, both contract and permanent. Good C coders are getting €850+ a day in places.

If you don't care what you do, are bright and hard-working go into medicine. At least you'll be rich.

If not, get an ACCA / ACA qualification and go into forensic accountancy / liquidations / risk & control. Jobs to beat the band.

Otherwise, don't ask people on the net and just do something you've always dreamed of.

As the others said, IT is still very much in demand. There was a bit of a slump for a few years following the dotcom crash at the start of the millennium, but it's been pretty strong since. I wouldn't recommend IT if you don't have at least a little bit of interest in it though.

Well, it definitely helps a bit with the existential angst if you care about the end product, but once you're promoted away from the coal face it doesn't matter that much. All management type roles are largely similar.
