Sprinting for "veterans"

After 2 weeks of being glued to the olympics I feel suitably motivated to get up off the coach and go and try my hand at some of the shorter events.
As a fairly fit 43 year old man I have been running the last 30 years or so and in that time have competed in every distance up to the marathon. Have got in to triathlons in recent years and get a great kick out of them.

My question is, are there regular races in the sprint events for the beginner or older athlete, or is there a club in Dublin with active "older" sprint sessions. I used to be a member of clonliffe harriers over 20 years ago and ran 100 - 400m regularly and loved it. Didint win an awful lot but enjoyed competing on the track. Still enjoy running but would love the challenge of a new discipline

Have been searching the web but cant seem to find anything.
    Any advice would be appreciated....

Yes there are loads of race/sprint events. The master track/field events cater for over 35s and goes up in 5 year increments. The All Irleand Masters is actually being held in Tullamore this Saturday( I am competing in this in the over 40 age group for 100 and 200)
The Dublin Graded series starts in April and finishes in August and they cater for all abilities. You would find all ages competing in them.
I took up sprinting for the first time last Summer, so you are never too late. As regards clubs that cater for this, my club Crusaders dont really cater for sprinting as we dont have a specific sprint coach for adults. I fell into the sprint group from Trinity last October cause they train in Irishtown and I got coached from Oct to March. At the moment I train with a couple of guys who are master athletes too and the odd session with some of the juveniles. As regards Clonliffe, I saw on their website that they cater for Master athletes also so you could make enquires there too...

I read an article recently and it was more about "how good is running for you"; and the impression it gave was the optimal training as you get older was to do fairly moderate sesssions.....I dont know what heart rate, but in the order of 5 x 8 minute miles 2 or 3 times a week.

Anyway, I'm 39 and when I do sessions, a lot of them are speed sessions, say 10 x 400s.....which tend to leave me completely f*cked.....I mean that is the point of them I suppose. But anyway, the thought does strike me.......is this actually not good for me to be doing these anaerobic sessions as I get older.

Does anyone have a view on this?

I'm 40 and I feel the pain too :) I suppose everything is relative and if you run to stay healthy and keep fit, I guess the easy approach is ample to keep weight down and maintain reasonable fitness.
Do you do the anaerobic sessions to get competitive?
I'm sure if you have a clean bill of health, the anaerobic stuff would be ok, your body will tell you that you are overdoing it, at least mine does anyway...
