I'm getting into mountain biking and I can avail of the bike to work scheme and really want a good solid mountain bike, what should I be looking out for? any brands I should look at? I was looking at voodoo in Halfords, lovely bike. any ideas?

i bought one of these on the bike 2 work a few weeks ago

    http://www.cube.eu/en/hard/comp/acid-greynblue/

and i love it, would highly recommend it.

cost me 890 euro in cycle superstore in tallaght.

the voodoo bikes tend to have suntour shocks which most people recommend staying away from, but it really depends what you want to use it for.

Well I want a bike that will last going down a mountain trail at speed, my budget would be about €900. I'm very ignorant when it comes to buying a bike, I tend to buy what looks nice. I rented a €900 mountin bike the last day and it cycled like a dream, I can't remember the brand however. Btw that bike looks class :D

Sort of related, so I'm not starting a new thread....

I bought a Hybrid and found it dull and boring to ride. I can appreciate skinny tyres having less rolling resistance and what have you, but god it was DULL to ride.
I used to love the hooliganism inherent in mountain-bikes and their responsive chassis.

Any direction on something under the €1,000 range (bike to work) that will make me feel like a delinquent kid again? (intention is to cycle to work occasionally and go to the odd forest with the elder boy.

+1 for the Cube Acid. Some other good options out there though and if you search the forum you will see lots of recommendations for bikes in and around that price range.

Best thing to do is to go to your local bike shop and try a few in the flesh. There are loads of bikes available at that price range, lots of which are good. Obviously it would be better if you find a shop where the staff mountainbike themselves.
