Hi, I am a student currently repeating my final year in college externally. My parents do not give me any money, just bread and board. I can't get a job anywhere and I assume that I don't qualify for any money from government. Is there anything I can do to get money? Can I apply for the dole at all? All I do is sleep, eat and look for jobs at the moment and I can't bear it much longer. Any advice is much appreciated, thank you.

Is there any kind of work you could do with your college? Maybe look at the boards they might have vacancies that are local and near by or even in the college itself.

You could always send speculative CV's to businesses/companies you be interested in working with even it meant doing so voluntarily and try to find a part-time job too? Is there anyone you know who could be a potential contact or know of someone who might have contacts? Join linkedin and a couple of recruitment agencies. The agencies might be able to help. Though if you like to do temp work maybe sign on to La Creme they are good to get in contact with people when suitable roles crop up. I am sure you could get your hours worked around college?

Its a case of shopping around for a part-time job to see who is hiring, meeting them face to face is one way of seeing if anything crops up than trying to fire out CV's to random places in the hope of funding yourself.

I don't think you are eligible for the dole but if you lived on your own you might be entitled to a grant if you haven't been a dependent on your parents for a period of time and you maybe able to get a rent allowance whether that is still around now I don't know. Get in contact with the Social Welfare office they could tell you if you are eligible for anything. Maybe the county council might help too.

    Good luck with it!

I'm repeating my final externally so I can work full time, so full time positions would be OK. Unfortunately I don't have any contacts for jobs at all, there is no one my parents know that have anything available. I'm 90% sure I can't get the dole since I'm technically still a student. So my only option is to keep on looking I suppose. What advice can you give about job seeking in general, because most places I go into just say they aren't hiring and give my the "we'll put it on file" line which is just a polite way of saying no. I ask to speak to the manager but they usually say the same thing. I've had one interview after handing out around 300 cv's so far and didn't get it. I think there is just something that people don't like about me personality or appearance wise. I do have good experience on my cv. I don't know what to do...

Don't think like that. The Irish economy is feckin shi-ite and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This is a country to visit - not to live in.

Ya I say maybe go to a professional job coach not just any random one.
Are you in Dublin? Plenty of Job/Career Coach's around that could help you. HR people are only trying to get numbers or recruiters just a database list based on commission so you really have to find a good one to be honest. Irishjobs website and myhorizon could look at your cv for a fee like and could help you with that.

Recruitment agencies are ok for a quick fix for a job but if you looking for something specific go with an agency that cater for the field you wish to go into even if its sales/office or related to your online course.

The fact that looking for part-time work is getting more difficult at the moment without enough experience. Have you looked into FAS jobs like CE's/Minimum wage if there are any ones suited? Even if you were to fill in for someone?

You be able to work around your online course with a job no problem.

300 CV's is a lot and you are approaching potential employers so it not like you aren't trying. You need to be on the dole or some kind of allowance to get onto a jobbridge. Though I think there are internships similar to it that you could do, unpaid unfortunately but you could do that for a short time in the hope of landing something that is paid? I have gotten that a lot....keep my cv on file for so long...

Have you considered voluntary work with non-profit organisation/voluntary organisation with a local volunteer centre for a short time? It give you something to do, you learn something and gain some value work experience and transferable skills?

Finding paid employment is tough at the moment due to the cutbacks and job losses and companies not being able to afford to hire people.

Could you look at going away from Ireland for a bit maybe or a working holiday?

I wouldn't be too worried like a lot of people in the same boat just that makes competition more fierce trying to get hired not like it was before that you could get a job to tailor you that day is gone or the case of walking into a job after college not the case any more regardless of work experience, qualifications, skills, results and personality! Its basically stand out from the crowd or knowing someone who could recommend you or word of mouth.

If you're doing it externally & you are available to work full time, go in to the social welfare & apply for the dole. They might say no because you're still studying but it can't hurt to try.

Hi, have you asked your college about financial assistance? Firstly, I was told that is provided to colleges by the government - so it is there for you. I was sheepish about asking for it myself 2 years ago, because I thought there would be little help left. Later on in your degree, like yourself, you have a great chance. You arrange an appointment, explain your situation, they go through figures, check you've no stashes of cash in any bank accounts (you provided the details, they don't hunt you) and you should be good to go. I was living at home when I applied, right before obligatory study abroad as part of my degree and I got lots of help. Out of all the admin I've dealt with over the years, these guys were the least hassle, no non-sense. :)
