Failed NCT just after service and pre NCT

My NCT was out and I got stopped at a checkpoint late last week - thankfully only given 10 days to provide insurance, licence and NCT to local cop shop.
I got car full service and pre nct at start of this week - and got work needed (tyres and exhaust) done.
Managed to get a cancellation for NCT today but FAILED:
    Left brake house cut
    Right brake hose perished
    Corrosion on door sill

So, I need to get all these fixed ASAP and rearrange test.
Should I go back to my local garage and expect to get something back?
NCT guy said he should have spotted the brake hoses at least during the seevice.
Anyone else failed after a service / pre NCT?

Also, should I just go to the gards and explain my situation? I won't have the NCT within the 10 days as requested now.

I know I was stupid to have my NCT out of date, but I've learned my lesson and tried my best to get it sorted now.

    Thanks

Pre NCT checks are a total waste of time and money. You will either replace stuff yoy dont need or in your case not have the car checked properly.

I always take the car in and work of a fail sheet.

That seems to be a common consensus alright.
As I am under time pressure to get it done, I wanted to be sure to pass it first time around.
The fact the brake hoses should have been caught during the full service (this right?) is really annoying me.

Bring the NCT fail report when presenting insurance etc and tell them you're working on getting it sorted.

I know what your saying. I reckon you should talk to the cop that stopped ya, most of them are sound enough. I had a crash recently with no test allthough it was booked and he said forget about it.

I would be inclined to bring my car elsewhere because a split brake hose is fairly noticeable.

I always went with the NCT check sheet as it's cheaper for a retest than a pre nct & service, and I heard they'll frequently get you to fix stuff that isn't broken as such. Wish the NCT checked clutch related stuff though..it's always a sickener when it passes and three weeks later it's died on a roundabout

These pre NCT check offers are really a waste of money imo unless the garage offering them in question will give you a written guarantee that it will pass or your money back. You can bet your bottom euro that no garage in their right mind would offer such a guarantee on a pre NCT check as all they are doing is checking obvious things that are common failures but at the end of the day it is just guess work. Use the NCT test itself as a way of knowing what needs fixing or not.

Once the cops see that you had it in for a test or that its in for a retest they wont do you on it so i wouldnt worry about it if you dont get it tested in the time they had given you to produce your documents as long as you have whatever else they asked for you'll be fine.

There is absolutely no guarantee that they wont prosecute for not having an NCT on the car. As with most things (tax slightly lapsed etc) the Gardai are generally pretty decent and understanding, but there is always the chance of getting one Garda who insists on upholding the law to the letter, so you just never know.
