Just caught the relay heats... Team GB made a howler on the changeover for the final leg. Ouch.
Anyone know why Bolt isn't in the relay team for Jamaica?

Will be back for the final. No need for him to run the semi.

Ah ok, thought it had to be the same team.
Will the runner who gets dropped still get a medal if the team wins?

We're in for a hell of a final tomorrow. Hope Bolt gets the anchor leg. Powell I assume is out?

No there is a team of 6 to choose from. I presume so though not sure.

US with the second fastest relay off all time faster than Jamaica back in Beijing there in the heat.

Yes, but they don't get to stand on the podium.

Jamaica have run faster than that twice. 37.10 in Beijing, 37.04 (I think) in Daegu.

Jamaica's heat was also inside the USA's world record that stood until 2008.

Jamaica is third with 37.31 from Berlin. USA's heat time is fourth fastest and second fastest nation.

Slightly off topic, but a good opportunity to ask this question:

Why is the 4x100m so fast?

So Jamaica's 2008 time of 37.10 is an average of 9.3 per 100m. Bolt won the 100m this Olympics in 9.63. SO is it all down to the standing Vs running starts?

    yes

The splits from Beijing (37.10) are:

    Nesta Carter, 10.41
    Michael Frater, 9.01
    Usain Bolt, 8.98
    Asafa Powell, 8.70

The lead off runners typically run slightly slower because they are running 100m on the bend. The second and fourth legs are typically about a second faster because they have a good running start, and the third leg is typically a little less than 1 second faster (maybe 0.6 or so) than their PB, because their leg is on the bend.

Another factor that makes the anchor leg the fastest is that the guy doesn't have to hand off to anyone. He can run through the line flat out.
