What's it like at Assistant Manager level in Big

I've been offered a job in Audit (non FS) at AM level in a Big 4 coming from a mid tier practice. I've read a few posts around here and it doesn't make for entirely good reading.

Are some of the big 4 firms better than others in terms of working late etc. My understanding was that busy season is from Jan, Feb and into March but I've heard that some firms work late all year round?

Is it the same in all Big 4 or are some better than others?

Im an AM at the moment. Jan to March is laughable as only the busy season.

Things will be quieter from June to September then the pick up again plus you might be given a large engagement during that time of the year which could keep you busy. Experience though is second to none.

fyi - I came from small practice as a senior start of last year, got promoted to AM end of last year.

My other half went from a small practice to manager in a Big 4. She hated it, had to work ridiculous hours, was reporting to 3 different partners who all wanted everything done "now," , given useless juniors, and found the whole experience chaotic, so much so, it was making her unwell. She left after less than a year and went to one of the bigger medium sizes firms and is happy as larry now, challenging work, but with a proper support structure, home by 6.30 most evenings. After seeing what she went through it put me off big 4. I doubt there is much difference between them above senior level.

What did you think of the transition from Small practice to Big 4? What were the main differences.

Also, which one do you prefer?

Did you OH join as a manager from a smaller firm as I thought it would be unusual for people to join as a manager from small practice to Big 4, usually they go in at a level below?

Yeah it was very unusual. She was approached initially for AM but after meeting the partner they gave her manager.

Bit off-topic folks but is it very difficult to switch to a big 4 firm from a small practice post-qualification? Do they generally recruit accountants from small practices and what are the requirements the look for?
