Galway City Gym is the only option in Galway City. It has a good number of active weightlifters.

firstly great decision on deciding to go the oly lifting route as opposed to isolated body building movements. oly lifting will really complement your rugby.

Yeah i know that i meant would it interfere with my performance rugby wise as ive heard some lifters train every day? but if its only 2 sessions a week then it'd be grand... So if i join Galway city Gym would i need to pay more for someone to show me the lifts or is it included in the membership? what would an average training session be like?

    Sound for the replies lads!

There are 4 or 5 of us lifting in galway city gym, there are no formal meet ups or anything. You'll get pointers and stuff and you'll learn by watching (not me though :p ). Pendlay is the one of the more active Olympic lifting forums on-line and Glenn has a decent beginners program. You would be better off drilling the positions before starting any of those programs.

youtube is your friend for how to exercises.

mark rippetoe does some very good instructional ones.

do you actually know what weightlifting is?

Yeah, stay away from anything related to Mark Rippetoe for Olympic Weightlifting. Wouldn't be mad about t-nation either

Ah right... was hoping for a coach and scheduled training! i imagine my form and flexibility will be atrocious, id say i'll need a ****load of pointers anyway.

learning to oly lift with youtube = short route to injury

When starting out how people think there are moving with a oly bar compared actually how they are moving are usually miles apart.

mark rippetoes videos are very good.

I think the OP has confused matters slightly.

Am I right in thinking some ppl assume he wants just the olympic lifts? Snatch /C&J

Im under the impression he just wants to start weights.

Then why is the thread called Olympic weightlifting and why is he looking for a club not just an auld gym. You are deluded

    100% this.

And Rippetoe's squat instructions are f*cking stupid if you ever want to squat a decent amount of weight and not get your face smashed into the floor.

Rippetoe is a powerlifter so his vids wouldn't be of much use to me. Ive been lifting weights for 6 years, now i want to start olympic lifting hence this thread...

fair enough - olympic lifting, I dont know a whole pile about.

A guy called Clarence Kenneddy has some great videos of him doing olympic lifting if you want to see what he's doing. he's at almost triple body weight in some things. His technique looks very good from what Ive seen too.

some chancer is right, off with ya

    off with ya

    lol

he doesnt have to based in Galway as hes on a lot of Youtube.

Looking at somebody with very good form and achieving great results would be a good idea for a total beginner.

Or a better idea would be to get somebody to watch you to ensure your form is correct.

You can pick up bad habits if your a beginner just relying on Youtube videos IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,480 ✭✭✭Chancer3001

thats why i never said he should JUST rely on Youtube videos ;)

of course he needs someone to show him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭Stench Blossoms

And isn't that what the OP was looking for?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,480 ✭✭✭Chancer3001

    it is yeah.

but if youre trying to learn something new, watching videos of it can help too...

whats that expression about digging a hole .....

maybe its due to lacking in oxygen from this evenings training session but I've been laughing my head off at the last few posts ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭Transform

i would push to go get some sessions with a coach at weekends in e.g. limerick.

Chances of getting things right by watching vids is quite low but can help as reminders once you have some basics nailed down

There are currently a set of Olympic weightlifters meeting every couple of days in Galway city gym by prior arrangement , They are being coached and its looking pretty good for continuing at the moment , so call 091 752666 , leave your mobile details and I will get back to you with the time and date of the next session .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Furryst

I think that there is enough interest to create a pretty decent team now ,This video has been put up to attract more potential lifters.Hopefully it will let more people know that it is going on .
