My father received a letter in the post from beaumont hospital saying he owes €100 to them from when he was brought by ambulance to A&E last week.

My father is 74 and has the over 70's medical card but my question to you is, does his medical card not take care of this bill ? or will he still have to pay the €100 ?. I thought once you have the medical card you should not have to pay for this charge ?. Thanks for any help on this as we are both confused as to why he got this bill when he has a medical card.

Normally they ask on admission if you have a medical card, but maybe someone ticked the wrong box and issues the invocie in error, a quick call to the hospital should confirm.

I asked him was he asked if he had a medical card and he said no-one asked him whether he had one. I told him to ring them to find out. Thanks for the reply.

Unless I'm mistaken, the €100 charge is only if you walk into A&E. It's meant to be a disincentive. I don't think you are meant to be charged if you are brought in via Bus.
