Why don't you just ask him what he wants it for?

I don't think dvpower was being smart. The reality is the only person who can tell you why your solicitor needs this, is your solicitor.

Anything we come up with would just be guessing.

If you are trying to claim Loss of Earnings from personal injury i suspect the other solicitor is trying to prove the "Loss of Earnings" by showing lack of payment etc.

If you've nothing to hide I wouldn't care too much but make it clear to you're solicitor that you don't want your bank details shared. I do think its fair enough that they want to see your accounts if you are trying to claim something like loss of earnings.

To be honest the above sounds like anti money laundering, a solicitor is under an obligation in certain circumstances to verify identity. I believe that some firms as a matter of course require it on every file, while other firms only require it on house sales or other large transactions. My own opinion is that it's best to do it on every file.

To comply with Anti-Money Laundering requirements your solicitor needs photo I.D. and proof of address.

Might a utility bill satisfy this rather than a bank statement?

I not really up to speed on the 2010 Act, but it may require that the documents are from a credit institution, but someone more knowledgeable may confirm.

Perfectly routine to be asked for ID .

Solicitors are covered by the same Anti-Money Laundering Regulations as banks. These Regulations are the reason why you are asked for photo ID and proof of address when opening a new bank account and also the same reason why your solicitor is looking for this information from you. This is perfectly normal.
