message has popped up on my laptop to say another computer has the same IP address? What does this mean and should I do something about it?
    Thanks

Another computer/device (phone, printer, router etc.) on your network has the same IP address. To fix the issue enable DHCP on all your devices or (possibly easier) set the IP on your computer manually, to be one that probably is not in use ie 192.168.1.34 or something

DHCP is most likely already enabled and is the cause of the issue. DHCP is a method of automatically assigning IP addresses. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the network should fix this.

This really depends, on each device the process is different. Usually the settings are available under network configuration. for Windows XP (For windows 7/vista go to Network and Sharing centre in Control Panel>Change adaptor settings) here

Edit: Just to point out as Tommay says, errors like this now and again can happen with DHCP, if they are a very frequent occurance setting an unused static IP may help

You can renew your IP address by:
Windows 7/Vista: Start menu, type in cmd and hit enter
Windows XP: Start menu -> Run, type cmd and hit enter

Then type into the new command prompt window:
    ipconfig /release
press enter and wait a moment and type
    ipconfig /renew
