Worth getting certifications before degree?

I'll be hopefully studying computer science from september onwards. I'm curious though, should I work towards getting certified in a few things now, or will I have the opportunity to do anything like this during the degree? I'm interested in getting basic ones like A+ (not sure on this one), network+, linux+ and security+. Then doing more advanced certs like CCNA and a good linux one (haven't researched these yet, suggestions?). That's a lot of money, so is there a need? Particularly when I think things like CCNA is only valid for 3 years?? I like the idea of these certs, because instead of just claiming I have experience in an area, I have a cert to prove it.

I'd concentrate on the degree as some things like the A+ can be apart of the course so a waste of your money and as you said they only have a short life which will probably run out before you even hit the work force.
Also you may go on to get training in these by your employer or other similar courses.

    I'll have a look....

    Edit:here it is.

That was handy, the search function is way better than it used to be!!

I'd mostly agree. September isnt that far away, and an IT Degree will definitely keep you busy. There's a IT Certification forum also which may elicit more reponses to this post too, if mods can share it. No harm having the certs I suppose if you are looking for summer work in IT.

I am also starting CS in September and to pass away the summer I am doing CCNA through FAS online (ecollege.ie). Search the FAS website. They do CCNA in 2 parts, suppose to be 14 weeks but if you have the knowledge about it you can do it much quicker. There is a lot of theory in it though.

Wouldn't bother myself. As said your degree course will keep likely you busy. Having said that I found 1st year terribly slow because I was going into the course with a non-zero amount of knowledge. If you're finding it a slow grind come January, you could start looking at other certification as a side line then.
