Our family farm has been inactive for many years and a family members planning on getting a herd number. We have roughly 50 acres with 16 acres of bog which will be given to collate for planting. Anyway my query is how much of a grant would such a farm of land be entitled to. Any help would be appreciated.

    REPS is gone.
AEOS doesn't look like opening up again.
If your relative can keep some stock on it, he/she may be able to claim a disadvantaged payment.
New SFP will come in a few years - but it may be based on reference years - nobody really knows. Best to start keeping some stock and farming the place.

Why would you give land for forestry to coillte?
If you plant it yourselves, there are sizeable grants availablle - and its tax free.

coillte dont buy land for planting anymore. they no longer plant it for private owners either. the bog may not be eligible for planting you'll need to get it looked at (for free) by a forester. heres the approved list of foresters http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/media/migration/forestry/forestservicegeneralinformation/RegisterofForesters150612.xls
if the bog is plantable the most you can plant of it will be about 8 acres, assuming you plant the other 34 acres of the farm. this is due to the new rules only allowing unenclosed land (bog) to make up 20% of the total planting area.

if you can plant the 42 acres (you'll know once a forester looks at it), you're probably going to plant 42 acres of spruce (paying you a grant of approx €6378 per year) or else 34 acres hardwood and 8 acres spruce (paying approx €7126 per year). those are figures paid to farmers, so you would need to progress with getting the herd number. USC is also deducted from forestry income in most circumstances
