Yes the 1.9TDI engine is extremely reliable once it is properly maintained.

I've heard lots of storys about passats and VWs in general and none of them were good. Reliability has fallen off a cliff. Handbrake, injectors being a common theme. If it were me, I wouldn't touch a passat with a pole. Far too expensive for the hassle you WILL get. Go British or Asian if you want reliability.

Handbrake problems are more of an issue with the early cars than the later examples. By 2008 the B6 Passat was a well proven car and most of the early reliability problems had been ironed out.

What a pile of nonsense. With respect I am sure the OP would rather deal in facts than stories you have heard :pac:

Well I would also ignore any posts along the lines of 'all VW are rubbish' as pick any manufacturer and you'll find someone who thinks ' XYZ is rubbish, dont touch them'.

I've got an 07 Passat 1.9 from new so over 5 years old now and 95K km on it. Overall its been a pretty reliable car, been serviced regularly and really has only had one main issue :

    • The Handbrake - I had the switch replaced and Software upgraded after 3 years. About a month ago I had another 'failure' of it but it only happened once and then resolved itself - been working perfectly since. Garage response was to spend €1500 and replace all components!
Apart from that couple of minor things :

    • Coolant pipe split and needed to be replaced. Recovery guy said he had never seen one go before so just but that down to bad luck.
    • Air conditioning seems to blow a little too cold sometimes but has been checked and apparently is blowing correct temp!
    • I managed to kick off the puddle light off the driver door :-)
    • Just last weekend discovered one of the headlamps has condensation inside so will probably need replacing.

Will need timing belt soon and clutch eventually I guess but that will be the case with any car! On a positive note its also on its original set of brake pads :D

That would be the main dealer price to probably replace both rear calipers and handbrake switch etc. Stupid diagnosis. Stupid price.
The handbrakes are still giving the odd problem on 08 cars but its not a major issue.

Diagnosis is the wrong word. There is no diagnosis taking place. It is simply a case of "I know lads, let's just replace everything in the system to make the problem go away"

They also switched from the old 2.0 Tdi PD engine to the newer 2.0 Tdi CR engine in late 2008. Seems to be more reliable so far. 1.9 Tdi was available upto 2010 when it was replaced by the 1.6 Tdi.
