I'm starting college in september and I have no money whatsoever :O I've applied for the grant and I think I might get it, as my sister did(I know there's still I chance I won't, but high hopes;)). Anyway, I couldn't get a job this summer as there are none around, so should I get a job when I move to college, or what? Also is it any way possible to get a loan without a job, just in case I might need one?

Getting a job is pretty difficult right now, so you can't depend on it really, but it's definitely worth applying. You could try & get work in the campus shops maybe. Most students are broke anyway! If you needed a loan your parents would probably have to guarantee it, so they would have to pay if you couldn't. It's not really advisable to get a loan with no job though because how would you start paying it back?

Yeah I know, I didn't think I'd have a chance with the loan anyway! I suppose applying would do no harm!

Yeah but be aware you'll probably have to begin repaying it right away so make sure you're in a position to do so

Do you know when those eligible for a grant actually get it? Like around what month?

It's changed this year compared to normal (my niece only got paid her money for 2011/2012 in the past couple of weeks). So this year they're going to give you monthly payments so you should get a payment each month.

That seems a lot better. I think my sister got half in December and the rest the next semester :O

My niece got it in two halves but both were in the past couple of weeks. Very stupid when you've finished college. But the new grant people, SUSI, are supposed to be doing it monthly. Hopefully it'll be a better system than people getting such late payments.

Get the maximum overdraft. Spend as little as possible and try to get any job you can.

Grant payments are usually delayed! I don't think I got mine until November last year :/ so bank on that being around for the start of the college term.

I think there are a few jobs out there for the likes of students (8-10hrs a week?!)

Keep an eye on fas.ie, that site usually have a good few jobs. I got my three jobs throughout college on that site!!

Just be careful it doesn't impinge on study! I'd try to maintain it below ten hours a week.

You could also try giving grinds of there is a subject you are particularly good at :)
