My boyfriend works in a bar, he has worked there for 4 years without a written contract. he was in work today so i went in and bought a drink, later his boss showed up and told him "he knew the rules about girlfriends drinking in the bar while he's working there". this was not specified at the time of employment and as far as i can understand, from what iv read on the internet, is not specification of a verbal contract he may or may not have received (4 years on and he still dosnt know where he stands). is this legal? iv been told that girlfriends of other bartenders drink in the bar while their other halves are working so...am i being discriminated against? regardless of anything else, i felt humiliated being made leave a bar for no justifiable reason.

(sorry for any missing letters, my keyboard is banjaxed!)

Thank you for letting me rant, any responses would be appreciated!

Don't be upset by it and hopefully that link helps you and your boyfriend read up on his position regarding his employment.

Poor manager is so scared of a free drink being given he bans the family of his staff. Seems a little selfish/greedy/ridiculous. And they wonder why bars are so deserted these days.

Many retailers would have similar rules - I'd suggest voting with your wallet and drinking else where.

I know one of the big pub owners. Had a rule that staff couldn't have relationships with each other.

I always wondered if it was legal. They were serious about it. They ask staff personal questions and warn them.

The pub owners were funny. A friend worked there. And one Saturday I went for a drink with him there - it was his day off. And the bar got busy. But my friend got a bollocking. He was told that if he was there on his day off, and it got busy he was expected to work.
