Root canal and dentist recommendation?

    Hi all,

Just looking for bit of advice, had a root canal done in march on lower molar and had a temp filling ever since. Its been wearing away and I now have pain and a lot of sensitivity in the tooth.
Dunno if that should be the case if the root is gone? Perhaps infection/she didnt get all the roots as she wasnt an endodontist?
Anyway I need to get it looked at and I'm broke so considering up north.
Anyone got recommendations/been in this situation before? Dentist previous said I'd eventually need a bar and crown to stop breaking- but pretty sure its not broken and I should sort out why its starting to pain again first!

    Thanks!

Yep leaking temp filling left in for too long lets bacteria back into the root canal and wrecks the whole effort causing new infection. You need to go get the tooth checked to see is the seal still intact and get a proper filling at the least or preferably a crown.

To all those other reading this, if you have a root canal done you will need a crown in 90% of cases and 100% of back teeth (back from the canine), this is to stop the tooth fracturing but as importantly to prevent leakage into the root canal again, filling simply dont cut it in most cases.

    I agree with fitzgeme.

I had a root canal done about 5 years ago, unfortunately they couldnt get all of the root so it after a while got infected.

I wussed out on going back to get it sorted and crowned. That would have made waaaay too much sense.

That was roughly 5 years ago as I said. 2 weeks ago as I was eating a Corento Ice Cream of all things, the toot fractured (I would imagine it just fractured more, probably was already sort of screwed.)

So anyway get the root canal done by a specialist, not your local dentist. They train for a couple more years than a normal dentist and thats generally all they do.
Just like if your getting a tooth out and your nervous its better to see an oral surgeon as they have better knowledge of that particular area especially if its gonna be an awkward extraction.

Bottom line is I had the tooth taken out as it couldnt be fixed and now have one less tooth to chew with.

I will be visiting the dentist every few months from now on for a clean and check up I can tell ya!!!

Gonna have teeth like this... :D

Yeah murphyebass...the general rule of thumb is any tooth that is root canal treated (with one of two confusing exceptions hardly worth mentioning) that is not crowned has a 50% chance of catastrophic fracture within 5 years, soon go sooner, some later but on average 5 years.

Also just as important as getting the canal well cleaned and filled with the root canal is sealing it from the oral environment with a crown (some would say this is the most important part, however the study this is based upon is not without some issues), of filling temporarily. There is no reason to go around with a temporary filling for more than a month or two.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to make an appointment for tomorrow and hopefully it isnt too late to get treated! Reckon I should go to an endodontist on this? Or would my local be ok for post and core and crown?
