WiiU Box art designs

It appears the official WiiU box art has been leaked via Amazon. I think they look pretty cool. It is reminiscent of the GameCube box art but that isn't a bad thing. I like that extra bit of colour over the Wii boxes which can look a little boring when all lined up.

    What do you think?

Wonder if each case has a slot for a SD Card. :)

What in the name of god is going on with the yellow trim?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭nitromaster

White would be better than yellow...but looking good :)

Would be perfect if they used a black top/box for mature games.

I still don't get why it's there. It draws attention to nothing and doesn't match the colour scheme at all.

This seems like a shop, it's that out of left field.

Well it's been confirmed as legit anyway

Warning to Alactric: Don't click on it. Multiple package art with yellow trim. :)

I didn't even notice the trim, to be honest

Think it looks great, the yellow stands out well too. Supposedly the case itself is gonna be blue, which sounds great to me:D

Hey now, that's a vital factor into whether you should buy the game or not.

I...wasn't complaining? I was pointing out how an otherwise beautiful piece of boxart was being marred by something which served no purpose. It doesn't match the rest of colour scheme at all. Or any of Nintendo's pre release material for that matter. It honestly reminds me of the old PS3 platinum hits boxes.

The decision was so peculiar it prompted people to question it's legitimacy in the first place.

Don't know how you feel about Kotaku commentors, but it jumps out for the wrong reason.

Yup, that's what I said, exactly. I hate Nintendo. I'll never buy a game from them again. :p

Honestly? It seems like pointless nitpicking. No offence intended btw, but its a tiny yellow stripe.

Yeah...I know. But I could take my car keys and make an inch long scratch in the box too. It would be tiny but it would still be there and out of place.

But the game inside is still the exact same

You did this in the quote up above too :D

We're not talking about the game or it's quality at all. It's about the box art. Which is supposed to be a salesman in itself.

I can't recall a time ever in my life the box art was any sort of influence on me to buy a game. When I'm in a game shop I'm drawn to the title, and the screenshots and info on the back, not the art or what colours they use.

Okay fine. What do you think purpose of box art is though? If you think it's so unimportant. Just curious.

Well you can't really have a blank space! Filler??

Oh also recognition. Most game series will have the main character on the box so you can easily find it on the shelf. But other than that, dunno if it serves a marketing purpose.

Yah which is why if I'm buying a used game I don't care if its not in the original box and just has a blank box with the name handwritten on it.

That's very practical and sensible. But you still don't think a game's box art has any aesthetic or artistic value beyond...say, merely identifying it in a shop?

A shop in which it's flanked by, 10, 20 maybe 30 other games competing for $60? Would you say, Left 4 Deads iconic boxart,
    http://man-fat.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/l4d.jpg

Does a better job of drawing attention to itself than, say, this?
    https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQHDMPS6x2FylEjY3NhYp6diORq_3eaXjG_MlcknhTIa-Q6k4KL6g

A game some might consider a far more important game than L4D?

edit: I'm not having a go or anything. I've actually become legitmately interested in this type of perspective, As I, am obviously obsessed with cover art or promtional imagery in general.

Maybe I buy games differently? If I see a good looking game on the shelf I always look up reviews of it before I purchase, even if the screenshots look great and whatnot.

If people are spending money on games based solely on the look of the box, I think they are silly. And the same goes for a game with a plain box. I read a lot of gaming review sites and forums so would usually have an idea of what I want before I go to the shop, so if it has a plain box that wouldn't catch my eye I will still find it.

That's how I do it anyway! Either way I couldn't care less about the yellow stripe.

Valve, is far far from the Call of Duty mentality.

Here's the thing though, I buy games the exact same way you do. I read reviews, I read forums like these, I get personal reccommendations, the whole shebang. Not once have I ever bought a game based "solely" on the games box, in fact, even graphic designers in my class would never dream of doing such a thing.

You'll even attest to their being such a thing as a "good looking" box and a "plain" one, such a distinction already proves box art has merit as an immediate, visual knock on effect no?

If you want me to tie it back into the "yellow stripe" (even though I think the discussion it inspired is far more interesting) I think most of the same principles apply, promo art is, as it implies art. I like the idea that someone might walk into a shop, knowing that a game is good, as you do. But all that said and done, you seem to be of the mind set that everything is fine in spite of the box art rather than having it accentuate it?

I'm not saying your wrong anything, but I am getting a bit confused with what your saying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,557 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Maybe the disc inside is the same yellow? :P

Besides, if it's a discussion of the box art making you decide between games(I'm the same as you. I would base it on what I want and not what catches my eye) then remember that yellow trim is on all Wii U titles so it shouldn't affect a decision based on the box art, assuming you're buying for Wii U at the time.

Also, don't know about you, but all my games are on my shelves sideways so I can't even see the fronts which means I would be able to see that trim. Though looking now, the PS3 cases are annoying as their sleeves aren't consistent with either PS3 on red background, or on black background with red trim.

Box art is important, it's the creme on the cake lets say.

But a tiny yellow stripe hardly denotes good/bad box art. It's a simple stripe...people, especially gamers, seem more & more hard to please. It it's not the stripe it would have been something else it seems

That zombie game has completely unimaginative cover design. It also has zombies. I've no reason to believe one of those games is more superior than the other based on their respective covers. But personally, I'd be way more likely to have a look at the back of Ico than whatever zombie survival game that was.

Videogame box design has been bland and boring ever since the DVD box style was adapted as the standard :( I couldn't care less about it anymore.

It was a lot more interesting when you had completely different packaging for different consoles.

Something I've only come across recently is how utterly cool the Japanese Gamecube boxes are.

Is that a psp sized box?:O
I always hated the giant dvd boxes for the gamecube discs.

Kinda yeah, it's a nice little small box which suits the dimensions of the Gamecube disc.

Then there's a cardboard art sleeve which goes over the top.

Miles nicer than a stupid big dvd case for such a small disc!

I think the box looks great and the yellow strip makes it stand out... well to me at least anyway.

Found an image of the Batman Arkham City cover-art for Wii U :

    Looks awesome!

I kinda like the WiiU boxart, but really think that Batman cover is awful. It looks more like a badly drawn albino Hulk than batman!

I'll admit that the arms on batman look way too large but maybe they'll fix up the cover before its released!

Could be like the GotY version on 260 and PS3 where you can barely see Batman for all the writing
