    Hello there,
I failed a CA (3000 word essay) and am repeating it. I just need to know if editing and amending my original essay counts as plagiarism in the eyes of DCU staff. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Don't you have to pick a new title when you fail an essay? Like, you're not allowed write on the same topic/area/title that you did the original on?

I've never had to repeat a CA before, so I honestly have no idea. If someone who has had to repeat an essay would be able to clarify this it would be great.

I haven't had to repeat an essay but our lecturer sent mails to everyone saying that if they were repeating they had to choose a different title to their original essay.

Best bet would be to mail your lecturer I guess!

    It's auto-plagiarism, it's a pretty big no-no.

I think its madness that its possible to plagiarise yourself.

No, you would be pulled up on auto-plagiarism if you were writing something else / similar and you used a portion of your previous essay work without referencing it. Resubmitting the exact same work because you failed is completely different, although, as pointed out, it is very unusual to be asked to submit the same essay title again so you should probably confirm with your lecture. Rewriting the same piece in its entirety would make absolutely no sense.

Why? You have people resubmitting the same piece, which they have already gained academic credit for, as a separate assignment for additional credit. You can reuse what you have done as long as you reference it.

You run the risk of what is officially called "Self Plagiarism" which means presenting your own work again (second time or more) without citing the first submission.
However, the bigger issue for you is, if the first essay wasn't good enough to pass, what makes you think some editing will make it good enough. Only you can answer this for yourself (or of course your lecturer), but I believe that commonly accepted wisdom is to do something new in this situation.
    Hope that helps.

You need to look up what is regarded as self plagiarism. Again, what the OP is asking, is not self plagiarism. It's just highly unlikely he would be allowed to submit the same work again. In my experience in two different Uni's, anyone who failed, had to choose another title.
