Q in regards paying for repairs

Hi everyone, sorry if this is the wrong forum, I'm not sure if it should be here or in Legal Discussions.

Long story short, myself and another person had an accident, and I will be paying for repairs instead of going through insurance.

We have a couple of estimates: 1) From a local garage where the accident happened (2 hours from his home, 10 minutes from me)

    2) From the garage where he bought the car (1 hour from his home, 1 hour from me)

The estimate from No.1 is far cheaper than No.2, and having received breakdowns from both, I don't see any difference in what they have to do.

The person whom I'm paying for the repairs is saying he thinks it would be a lot easier to get repairs done at the garage where he bought the car, for the convenience, but this is a lot of money for me and getting it done in garage No.1 will work out cheaper.

Is there anything I can do here, or is it up to the person I'm paying for? I was thinking that since I'm paying that I should choose where to pay, but I could be totally wrong.

    Thanks for the help.

ask him to pay the excess over your garage.

3rd party gets to chose where the repair is done.

EDIT: The Third Party being the person who's car is getting repaired?

You have no say really. If you damaged his car, he can get it fixed where he likes. Talking to him directly and reasoning with him would be your best bet.
If it were me, I'd be very fussy as to where my car was fixed, but I'd be happy to work with the person paying if I could get a cheaper place and be assured of their work. There aren't many places who do a good spray job.
Having said that, the garage where he bought the car if it's a main dealer often just outsource, so you're paying over the odds. You could find out where they outsource to and contact that guy directly.

This should be how it works, but of course all work would have to be fully guaranteed.

Maybe you could go collect his car and bring it to your guy, then bring it back when its done?

It's H+H Motors in Waterford. I'd assume it's a Renault garage, I don't know though. They emailed me their estimate a while ago after I rang them querying the cost. How could I find who the outsource is and what should I ask him if I can get through to him?

Ya, they said they'll have to put in a special order for the listed parts and they need 100% pre payment.

This is how simple fender benders turn into personal injury claims.

If you damaged his property u should pay up.
It's his choice as to where it get fixed.

I know if someone crashed into me and tried getting me to get my car fixed in a garage I didn't know I wouldn't go along with it.

If you start playing hard ball you could easily end up getting a much larger bill or he will just claim off your insurance.

Yes I know I'm paying up.

I'm not playing hardball, and didn't say I am. I was just asking here if it was going to be worthwhile trying to get him to go to Clonmel instead.

Not if you're being ripped off. The owner of the other car could easily have got an exaggerated quote & made an 'arrangement' with his garage.

If there's a big difference in quotes, that's a red flag.

Or the owner could have gone to a reputable repairer and the OP could have gone to some cheapo guy.

Or the owner went to the garage they bought the car as they just knew no one else...

I'm not saying that's what happened, but there's two sides to each story.

I went to a reputable Ford Dealership in Clonmel who have a numerous garages in the South East.

He asked the garage where he got the car because imo, he wouldn't know what else to do if you get me. He prob thought it was the best idea.

Of course it depends on the difference between the 2 quotes. If you were to 'win' the negotiations and get the car fixed in your garage, you are also opening up all sorts of possibilities where the car owner isn't happy with the work that has been carried out ... and all the further complications it could bring. Whereas if the car goes to the garage he recommends, that's you out of the loop.
Best of luck with your negotiations.

I hate to say it but take the pain, or this guy could be at your door in six months whinging that the lacquer came off etc.

Alternately split the difference. If your quote is 600, and his garage is 1000, give him 800 quid to get it fixed wherever he wants. You are now out of the loop, and whether he repairs it or not isn't your problem.

And if you can, don't pay him the vat on the estimates either!

If it were me and you had already admitted liability then why would I go an extra hour out of my way to save you a few quid ?

What if you know a guy in the Garage your saying I can bring my car to ?

What if theres a problem afterwards with the repair, will I be up and down to this Garage to get it sorted ?

At least I know the Garage I bought the car from is ok.

If you start messing him around he might just go through Insurance anyway.

You're in the wrong here, you should sort it the way he wants it sorted.

A garage two hours away from him? Are you for real OP, not many people would consider that option.
